The Swap Shop at the Darien Transfer Station and Recycling Center is opening Monday for the first time since the pandemic closed it, town officials have announced, and they’ve explained why the shop won’t be open on Saturdays yet.
After a year long battle with myelodysplastic syndrome and leukemia, the Rev. Beverly K. Weatherly passed into Eternal Glory on Friday, May 28, held by her children and grandchildren.
In a domestic incident, a 56-year-old Darien man kicked a plastic laundry basket, which struck a victim in the shin, and he pushed the victim onto a bed, police said. The man was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct.
Neil Stanley Johnson of Danbury, formerly of Easton, passed away suddenly at Danbury Hospital on May 22 at age 59.
Dorothea Elizabeth Manegio of New Milford passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 in Danbury. She was 88.
Darien Senior Center members are being welcomed back to more in-person programs indoors at the Mather Community Center on Monday, June 7. But the return to in-person programs has already begun and is gradual.
The lunch pickup program, for instance, is continuing into the foreseeable future — and seniors picking up lunches today (Friday) can park and hear an outdoor concert from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the parking lot.
In a domestic violence incident late Monday night, a Hecker Avenue man put his hands around the neck of someone else “in a forceful manner for a short time, causing pain to the victim,” police said. He was arrested.
A new exhibition of abstract art, “Britt Bair Art: Expressions in Color,” will be on view Thursday, June 10 through July 6 at 1027 Post Road in Darien.
Britt Bair is an abstract expressionist artist who works in acrylic, mixed media and oil, mixing vibrant colors to create her own visual language.
A Shields Lane resident received a call from a man who said he was from her bank and asked her to confirm some account information.

A 43-year-old Darien woman had been issued a protective order forbidding her from assaulting a particular person, but she did anyway, in a domestic incident, Darien police said.
Darien Library is pleased to welcome back Chaya Milchtein of Mechanic Shop Femme for an event that will boost car owners’ confidence in maintaining their vehicles.
This virtual event will take place at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 8. You’ll need to register first.
Trace evidence left in a Jeep Wrangler stolen in Darien in November 2019 led to the recent arrest of a man, who was also charged in connection to a facsimile of a firearm that was found in the vehicle which crashed after a Bridgeport police chase.
Police didn’t say what the trace evidence was.
The George Billis Gallery on Main Street in Westport is presenting a group exhibition from June 18 – July 25, featuring four painters and a ceramicist.
An opening reception for the exhibit will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 18, no reservations required. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular business hours.

A 41-year-old Bridgeport man tried to rob a woman as she walked through the Center Street parking lot near Bodega Taco Bar, Darien police said.
He first demanded money from her, and when she refused, he tried to grab her purse, but failed, police said.

Sharad Samy, in his keynote speech at Darien’s Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, asked his listeners to remember what the red, white and blue of the U.S. flag stand for and to “Remember those who gave their lives for us today.
“Remember that they were just like you and me,” he told the crowd of about 200 people at the veterans’ burial ground in Spring Grove Cemetery. “Remember that they gave what we all treasure the most — life — so that you and I can enjoy our great nation each and every day.” And he described several of them who were cut down in wars from the American Revolution to Vietnam.
Elizabeth “Liz” Fulton died in her sleep in Darien, Conn. on January 27, 2021. She was 70.
