A mood of quiet excitement filled the gym on Jan. 8. “Let’s go! You got it!” The calls rang out, with Darien gymnasts encouraging each other to jump higher and finish stronger on vault, bars, beam, and floor. — an article by Holly Russell, on behalf of the team

The team finished with a 126.65 to beat Wilton and New Canaan — in person this year rather than virtually, which meant that for the first time since the start of the epidemic, the athletes could cheer for their rivals in person, too.

Nearly half of all pregnant women at Yale-New Haven Health’s network of hospitals have tested positive COVID-19, the organization’s officials said Wednesday at an online news conference. At the news conference, officials also said:

—Expect about four more days of a “plateau” of COVID-19 cases in hospitals and then a decline over four to six weeks, one hospital official predicted. —Also, hospital staff members have been reporting more cases of incivility from patients and family members, said the hospital network’s CEO, Marna Borgstrom. —Borgstrom said at the end of 2021, the health system had 531 COVID-19-positive hospitalize patients. When a woman living on Hollow Tree Ridge Road checked her mailbox on Wednesday, Jan. 5, she found it open and empty, although a package had been delivered, according to the U.S. Postal Service. The woman reported the incident to police at 1:39 p.m. that day. According to USPS delivery tracking information (which you can get online, here), she said, a package was delivered to her at 7:57 p.m. two days before, on Monday, Jan. 3.

A 24-year-old man was charged with driving while under the influence Saturday after a police officer saw his car go over the double yellow line on the Post Road near Noroton Avenue, police said. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

At 2:32 a.m., the officer saw the vehicle being driven west. (Police didn’t say whether the vehicle was a car, SUV or truck). After seeing the vehicle cross the yellow lines, the officer stopped it. The driver had slurred speech, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol.

Christopher Li, a 4th grader at Hindley School, came in first place at the 2021 Piano Star International Competition. In the event, live-streamed on Dec. 11, Christopher performed in Amateur Group B, competing against 37 players from 13 countries. After performing in several preliminary rounds, he performed Golliwog’s Cakewalk by Debussy in the Grand Finals. Christopher was awarded $200 in prize money.

The Darien Health Department advises residents to test their homes for radon gas especially now that many families are spending more time at home due to COVID-19. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas that is found throughout the US. Most of the time, it is harmlessly dispersed in outdoor air, but it can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Exposure to elevated levels of radon has been shown to cause lung damage and cancer in humans.

Cameron Herbert Repp a resident of Norwalk, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 12, 2021 at the age of 92. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Herbert Nelson Repp and Lavinia Stuart Repp. Cameron attended Hindley Elementary, Deerfield Academy and Kent State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree. He then went onto have several jobs which included working for Walden Books, Yacht Haven, Rings End Lumber, Lloyd Lumber and Creative Cabinetry.

First Selectman Monica McNally announced late Thursday afternoon that the town has received 1,260 test kits and a supply of N95 masks from state authorities, and they’ll be handed out at a new distribution event early this Saturday afternoon. The free, drive-thru distribution event will take place the way the last one did — with vehicles entering the Darien High School campus from Noroton Avenue and leaving from Nutmeg Lane. (High School Lane will be blocked.)

The event runs from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Only Darien residents can take part, and proof of residency is required. “Walk-ins, with proof of residency, will be helped between 2:30 and 3 p.m., depending on supply,” McNally’s CodeRed announcement said. “As with the previous distribution, there aren’t enough tests for everyone in town,” McNally said.

A vehicle drove on the field next to Hindley School, leaving tire tracks and hitting a light post, causing it to lean over. The incident happened sometime before 10:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, when the police officer arrived. White transfer paint was left on the post, and plastic car pieces (including one with a Volvo stamp) were on the ground nearby. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them at (203) 662-5300.

Pamela P. Elliott passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2021. Since contracting Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia over 10 years ago, it was her strong desire to remain at home, surrounded by family, friends and the familiar view of the Goodwives River. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, to Ray and Polly Peterson, Pam was raised in Boardman, Ohio and graduated from Boardman High School in 1971. From there she received her BA degree in Education and Art History at Marietta College, Marietta, OH in 1975.

There were 49 new COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday among students and employees in Darien Public Schools, district officials said, and Monday’s total of 55 was revised upward to 65. In related COVID-19 news, the Darien Health Department released its weekly update on Tuesday, showing 63 new COVID-19 cases reported in the seven-day period from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3. Numbers for COVID-19 new cases reached a high point in the six days from Dec.

A 26-year-old woman has just been arrested on larceny and identity theft charges after employee paychecks were stolen at Woodway Country Club just over a year ago, and her bank account was used to cash the stolen checks, police said. Darien police gave this account of the incident and investigation, including accusations not proven in court:

Several paychecks and some Amazon gift cards were missing in the theft at the country club on Hoyt Street, reported to police on Dec. 16, 2020. Darien police detectives watched video surveillance records showing “the suspect and vehicle used in the incident,” the police news release said. The news release didn’t directly say the suspect was Marleny Nunez of Perry Street in Stamford, the woman they arrested on Sunday.

A 35-year-old woman driving on West Avenue at 6:20 p.m. on New Year’s Eve struck guardrail, then drove off, police said. Soon afterward, she was charged with driving while under the influence. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

Police went to West Avenue near the two intersections of West and Holmes Avenues after witnesses called them to the scene. The police news release didn’t say how they contacted the driver, a resident of Glenbrook Road in Stamford. While speaking with the woman, police smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage.

Darien, like other local governments around the country, is getting a sudden infusion of federal aid this year to make up for extra money spent on COVID-19. Darien’s slice of the $130 billion pie amounts to $6.4 million. An ad hoc committee has been appointed to suggest where the town should spend the money. First Selectman Monica McNally mentioned the committee as part of her roundup of updates to the Board of Selectmen at its meeting Monday night. What the town decides to spend the money on is restricted, but the federal government will allow the spending to go toward “public health expenditures, address the negative economic impacts caused by the public health emergency, replace lost public sector revenue, provide premium pay for essential workers, invest in water, sewer and broadband infrastructure,” said Selectman Jon Zagrodzky, who’s been appointed to head the panel.
