Karen Kreitzberger Polett has been installed as regent of Darien’s Good Wife’s River Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution by Connecticut DAR State Regent Christy Hendrie at a recent ceremony and high tea held at the Country Club of Darien. — an announcement from the Good Wife’s River Chapter of the DAR

Polett has previously served as regent, registrar, treasurer and is also an honorary regent. Elected officers who will all serve for three-year terms include: left to right Historian, Vigee Droesch; Recording Secretary, Rebecca Siciliano; Treasurer, Virginia Otis; Chaplain, Carol Wilder-Tamme; Regent, Karen K. Polett with former Regent, Nicole Gorman. Not pictured is Vice Regent, Tracy Root. Appointed Chapter Chairmen are: Christine Pasiakos, Mary Beth Savage, Robin Salmans, Diane Drugge, Virginia Otis, Sandra MacPherson, Meredith Carper and Nicole Gorman.

Two RTM Districts Meet Thursday to Learn About, Discuss Proposed Great Island Purchase

Members of the Representative Town Meeting District II and District IV will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 23 in Town Hall Auditorium to learn more about and discuss the proposed Great Island purchase. First Selectman Monica McNally and Board of Finance Chair James Palen, as well as members of the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Great Island is in RTM District II and borders neighborhoods in District IV. The meeting will be of particular interest to RTM representatives and residents of these two Districts but is open to the community. Clara Sartori

I love getting feedback from you, my faithful readers. So I thought I’d share some recent comments. Last week I wrote about the railroads’ history of naming their best trains and stations. One reader, CL, reminded me that Metro-North names its express train to Yankee stadium “The Yankee Clipper”, a nice homage to baseball great Joe DiMaggio. Another reader, BW, wrote “In Ireland, all the inter-city trains have names; they are named after Ireland’s rivers.” That’s classy.

Where Do You (Legally) Buy Pot Around Here? Well, You Don’t. Not Just Yet. You’ve Got to Hit the Road.

Connecticut is investing $3 million in a new ad campaign to promote tourism in our state. But here’s a theme you won’t hear mentioned — yet. “Whether you simply wander or plunge into the surf, cannabis can add pleasure to your beach visit.”

Such was the promise on a Mystic-based private tourism website, VisitNewEngland.com talking about Massachusetts beaches. But the site’s flowery pot prose also goes on to describe some of our tourism haunts that can be enhanced by marijuana. “If you’re the type of weed smoker who loves to think deep, pondering thoughts about space and time, you’re in luck: Connecticut is home to some of the nation’s oldest historic houses, buildings, and towns.” According to state figures there are over 52,000 registered medical marijuana users in Connecticut.

Nora D. Ryan, beloved wife of Thomas J. Ryan, died on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after a long battle with interstitial lung disease. Nora was a long-time resident of Darien before retiring to Southport, North Carolina. She had a lengthy career as a corporate paralegal for various Fortune 50 corporations and law firms in Connecticut and New York City. In her leisure time, Nora was an avid reader, as well as a talented cook, baker and seamstress. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and her two dogs.

We have transformed your Darien Library experience. Aside from new email reminders for events and study room bookings, we’ve made it easier to discover the over 1.1 million items we have for you to enjoy. Get more out of your Library membership. Come celebrate our new website with a free coffee at the Café! Just ask for your coffee to be put on the Library’s tab on May 10.It’s for you! The launch of the new catalog and website are made possible via a generous grant from the Darien Foundation.
