John Wolcott Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal

Vietnam veteran John Wolcott will be the Grand Marshal in this year’s Darien Memorial Day Parade, the town Monuments and Ceremonies Commission announced.— an announcement from the commissionBorn in Berkeley, California in 1943, John lived in northern California, Peru and Trinidad before attending the University of California, Davis, then Berkeley, collecting bachelor’s and advanced degrees.John entered the army in 1967, achieved the rank of captain, served one year at Fort Carson, Colorado before shipping out to Vietnam, where he served a year and a day at Pleiku in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star.John’s career as a CPA began with Price Waterhouse in the Bay Area for six years. John and his wife, Jane moved to Darien when he was asked to “temporarily” relocate to the New York office.When asked to resume his career in San Francisco, John and Jane demurred, choosing to remain in Darien, believing Darien was the perfect place to raise their two beautiful daughters, Dana and Kristine, a decision they’ve never regretted.John joined a NYC boutique investment firm as SVP/CFO for a decade, before devoting the remainder of his career to private wealth management.Locally, John has served as treasurer and on the boards of both the Middlesex Club and Country Club of Darien, and is a former president of the Darien Mens Association.John was recently elected to the Town Board of Finance.John and Jane love watching their four grandchildren grow up (and their daughters and sons-in-law managing that effort,) travel, theatre, museums, music, reading, suffer as faithful Cal and 49er fans, and play duplicate bridge.John will ride at the head of the Parade, which will commence at 10:00AM, starting from Goodwives Shopping Center, marching up the Post Road to Spring Grove Veterans Cemetery, where our traditional Commemoration Ceremony honoring those who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces will take place at 11:15.Any organization looking for information regarding the parade should email the parade committee at: 06820mayparade@gmail.com

Airplanes have Wi-Fi. Even Connecticut’s CTfastrak commuter bus system from New Britain to Hartford gives its passengers free Wi-Fi. Commuter railroads across the US offer Wi-Fi, including Boston’s MBTA. Wi-Fi is everywhere — but not on Metro-North. So the Connecticut legislature has just budgeted $23 million to install 5G technology on the railroad’s M8 cars.

Geraldine “Gerry” Marshall, age 85, died peacefully on February 11, 2022, in her residence at Sunrise Senior Living in Fairfield, Connecticut. Her full and colorful life and legacies as a teacher, artist, and independent spirit will always be remembered by her family and close friends. The daughter of Louise and Sidney N. Zampiello, Gerry was born in New Haven on Aug. 6, 1936. Gerry and her older brother Richard were raised by their parents in nearby Hamden.

Souren Richard Nepola, 72, of New Britain, Connecticut, and formerly of Darien, Stamford and New Canaan, passed away on April 7, 2022, in New Haven. Born in Stamford on July 8, 1949, Rick was the devoted son of the late Salvatore Richard Nepola, DDS and late Dorothy E. Nepola née Terzian, formerly of Darien and New Canaan. Rick was a member of Darien High School class of 1967; then graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University in 1971, with a BSBA degree in Business and Finance. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1976. For over 40 years, Rick was a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and American Bar Association.

John M. Callagy died on April 28 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was 77. He had been a member of the Darien Board of Finance. John, the son of Judge Martin V. Callagy and Elizabeth Sherwood Callagy, was born May 22, 1944. Raised in New York City, John attended Saint Ignatius Loyola parochial school and Loyola School.

Jeffrey Steven Teare, 60, of Wesley Chapel, Florida and formerly of Darien, Trumbull and Newtown, passed away on May 2, 2022, surrounded by all who loved him. Jeff was born May 31, 1961 in Stamford and raised in Darien. He was the son of the late Connie Lee and Rollin Teare. After studying electromechanical technology at SUNY New Paltz, Jeff went on to own Travelin’ Tunes, a car audio business in Monroe. He later worked as a fabrication & technical specialist for Sony Mobile Electronics, designing and producing award-winning custom show vehicles, and was recently semi-retired from IT consulting.

One of nature’s oldest – but diminishing – beach mating rituals is about to begin its annual springtime cycle, and The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk needs volunteers to help document it. — an announcement from the Maritime Aquarium

During the new and full moons each spring, horseshoe crabs come up out of Long Island Sound to spawn in the sand. It’s a perfect time to place tags on the animals for an ongoing horseshoe crab census, which has helped to show a steady decrease in their local population. Despite this decrease, enough crabs still come ashore that the Aquarium staff needs volunteers to help. “Joining this effort helps to provide important data about this amazing creature, which has survived since before the time of the dinosaurs but whose numbers are struggling,” said Bridget Cervero, Senior Education Manager for the Aquarium.

This Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Hindley Happening fair will be — gotta say it: happening — at Hindley School at the corner of Nearwater Lane and the Post Road in Noroton. Expect heavy traffic, Darien police are reminding drivers. “There will be extremely limited parking availability due to this event and other private events taking place in Noroton Center,” said a police announcement on Friday. “Please plan ahead for traffic delays or seek alternate routes. New Canaan police say residents in that town reported a black bear Tuesday morning, just north of the Merritt Parkway in the area of Old Stamford Road (Route 106), which becomes Hoyt Street in Darien. — This article was originally published by NewCanaanite.com. Black bears typically breed in late June or early July, according to the state. During that time, males travel extensively in search of females. In New Canaan, bear sightings are reported to police all throughout town.

After a two-year hiatus, the Hindley Happening carnival is taking place on Saturday, May 7, with rides, fun food, and games where you and your kids can win tickets for prizes, the Hindley PTO announced. Food offerings include Fjord, Darien Butcher Shop, Heights Pizza, Uncle’s Hot Dogs, Worlds Best Sundae, Kona Ice, carnival favorites like cotton candy, and more. “There is something for everyone, at every age,” the PTO announcement said. The PTO uses the event to raise money for the school. The carnival starts at 10 a.m. and runs till 6 p.m.

The Hindley Happening carnival is at Hindley Elementary School at the corner of the Post Road and Nearwater Lane.

Clifford W. DeForest, 91, of Darien passed away on May 2 at home surrounded by his loved ones. Clifford was born at Norwalk Hospital on Sept. 28, 1930. He was the son of John and Viola DeForest of New Canaan and graduated from New Canaan High School in 1948. He lived in New Canaan, and served as a special officer with the New Canaan Police Department before moving to Darien in 1951.
