At least 14 unlocked vehicles parked at homes in the Noroton Bay neighborhood were entered overnight, possibly by teenagers or young men from Hartford looking to steal nice cars for joy riding, Darien police said. Four vehicles with keys left inside them were taken sometime before dawn Monday morning, with one found around the corner from where it was parked, two others found (by 1 p.m.) in Hartford and the fourth still missing, police said. At about 1 p.m., Darien police learned from Hartford police that officers in that city stopped one of the vehicles with three young men or teenagers in it, and charges are expected to be filed against at least one of them. Darien police described the matter with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

Police believe the car thieves are among a group of teenagers or young men in a Hartford neighborhood who repeatedly go to upscale neighborhoods to find fancier cars to steal and ride around in before abandoning them in an area of Hartford. City police found a number of abandoned, stolen vehicles, including a BMW X5 sport utility vehicle stolen from Noroton Bay Monday morning.

Two vehicles, apparently both unlocked, were entered in Woodway Country Club parking lots, and credit cards taken from one of them were used before either of the victims realized the thefts had taken place, police said. Police say they’ve been examining a surveillance video recording of the parking lot from when the crimes took place late in the afternoon of Wednesday, June 29 at the club, located at 412 Hoyt St. In one case, a 2014 Jeep Limited, inadvertently left unlocked along the pond side of a parking lot, was entered when it was parked there from 2 to 4:45 p.m. Police said the thief was caught on surveillance camera at about 4:15 p.m. entering the cars. The victim, a 59-year-old New Canaan woman, said she didn’t realize anything had been taken until she received a call the next day from her bank asking her about some transactions. Police said nothing was reported stolen other than credit and debit cards.

A man on his way to a construction site at a home on Raiders Lane had to park his pickup truck on Red Coat Pass near Tory Hole Road because some paving work was blocking the way. And that’s the last the 40-year-old Stamford man ever saw of the $780 he left bundled with some credit cards on the front seat of the unlocked pickup truck — that he left with windows open, he told police. His credit cards were left in the pickup truck, a 1990 Ford Ranger. The incident was reported to police at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15. A 35-year-old flagman for the paving project told police he had a clear view of the parked truck and had been working at the site since about 6:45 a.m. He said he didn’t recall when the truck was parked there, and a lot of people had walked by that spot throughout the morning.

Darien police have charged two teenagers with burglarizing a house on Holmes Court last April and stealing cash and electronic items from it. Here’s the Darien police announcement (police accusations are not proof of guilt):

The Darien Police Department investigated a residential burglary on Holmes Court on April 20, 2016.  It was determined that suspects entered the residence through an unlocked door and removed various electronics and cash. Due to the close proximity to the city border, detectives notified the Stamford Police Property Crime Unit to make them aware of the incident. The following day the Stamford detectives contacted Darien Police and advised that they had two burglary suspects in custody that matched the description of the Holmes Court burglary suspects. Darien Police Detectives then interviewed 18 year old Deandre Parsons of 7 Lewelyn St.
