Jewelry valued at $35,000 was stolen from a jewelry box in the closet of a home on Sylvan Road where the owner has been leaving the outside doors unlocked to allow easy access for numerous workers — carpenters, painters and cleaners.

And now, apparently, a thief.

The theft was reported to police on Nov. 20. The victim said she had last seen the jewelry on Nov. 14.

Police checked the house for any signs of forced entry, but found none.

Roughly seven tenths of a mile away, on Dellwood Road, someone reported two females walked down a woman’s driveway, looked in her garage and then were picked up by someone driving a small, black Ford. Police were called after the car drove away, sometime on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Police were given the license plate number, which showed the car is a Hertz rental. Police are trying to contact the person who rented the vehicle to ask what that person was doing in the neighborhood. Other than suspicious activity occurring within a mile of the Sylvan Road theft, police did not say they had any further reason to connect the two incidents.

(This Google map shows the two streets — the addresses on Sylvan and Dellwood roads were not released by police, but for each street, the address “1” was used in order to create the map.)
