A small safe containing a gun was among the items stolen from one of three Tokeneke houses burglarized over Independence Day weekend, police said.

“We do have a suspect we’re working on,” Darien Police Chief Duane Lovello said at the Wednesday afternoon meeting of the Police Commission, as previously reported by Darienite.com. “We think he may be hitting the area — throughout the lower Fairfield County area.”

All three burglaries appeared to have happened at night, he said.

Darien police gave this account of the incidents, which all seem to have taken place sometime between July 1-5:

Arrowhead Way

The homeowner left at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 1 and returned by 7:20 p.m., Tuesday, July 5 to find numerous items stolen from the master bedroom and the master bathroom.

The homeowner first noticed drawers in a desk opened and some ransacking in the master bedroom. A small safe that had been on top of an armoire but not bolted down was missing, and a small safe bolted down on a shelf in the bathroom adjoining the master bedroom had been forcibly removed.

That small safe held a Glock 19mm firearm. Numerous other items were moved around in the bathroom, located on the second floor. A window of that bathroom had been smashed, and that appears to be the point of entry.

Police didn’t see a ladder or other way that access could have been gained to the second-floor bathroom window.

Cross Road

The incident was reported to police at 8:25 a.m. on July 4. A house sitter reported someone came into the home sometime overnight. Nothing was known to be missing. No forced entry was made, and it appeared that an outside door had been left unlocked.

South Trail

The residents of this home were away from 7 a.m. on July 1 to 2:45 p.m. on July 5, and reported at 3:29 p.m. that day that someone had been inside the house. There was no sign of forced entry, so police believe the house was likely unlocked.

The residents noticed things out of place in the home, then saw that the master bedroom had been ransacked. Jewelry had been spread on the floor. At the time of the police report, a member of the family was not yet home but would have a better idea whether or not items were missing.

In each case, police asked nearby residents if they had heard or seen anything suspicious, but no one did.
