Here’s who won the Darien Youth Commission’s  22nd Annual Halloween Window Painting Contest this year. Town Youth Director Alicia Sillars announced the winners Thursday and described this year’s contest with this statement:
Fortunately, the weather was absolutely perfect — a bright, crisp, sunny fall day. With 30 teams of middle & high school aged students painting storefronts throughout the community, it was hard not to get caught up in the fun! Like many special events, these activities are made possible as a result of the unique partnership the Darien Youth Commission forges with the public and private sectors. Special thanks to Beth Cherico, owner of Pie in the Sky, LLC (a mobile art education service) for lending her expertise to the judging portion of this event.

Students ages 8 to 18 are encouraged to come audition for this Supercalifragilisticexpialidocius story about a family in turmoil and the magical nanny who saves the day. Featuring classic songs like: “Step In Time,“ “Jolly Holiday” and “A Spoon Full Of Sugar,” Mary Poppins is one of the world’s most beloved musicals. Performances of Mary Poppins JR. will take place on April 24, 25 and 26, 2020.

Police Break Up Teenage Party With Alcohol on Contentment Island Road

A complaint about parking led police on Saturday night to a home on Contentment Island Road, where they came across an intoxicated teenager hosting a party with his sibling and 14 other teenagers, police said. No charges were filed, although police said they informed all partygoers that the department’s Youth Division detectives would be getting in touch with them and their parents. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations that have not been proven in court (if they ever get to court):

At 9:15 p.m., police received the complaint (the police announcement didn’t describe anything more specific about that report). When they went to the house, police spoke with children of the homeowner, who was out of state. The homeowner later told police that his teens were supposed to be staying with friends.

Social Worker Joins Community Fund’s Youth Asset Team

Licensed Clinical Social Worker Andrew Tepper has joined The Community Fund of Darien as an advisor to the organization’s Youth Asset Team. Tepper will help plan prevention-related events and speakers, as well as alcohol-alternative events for their peers. He’ll provide the teen perspective at Thriving Youth Task Force meetings, and mentor middle school Youth Give Back students. “We are so excited to welcome Andrew to the Youth Asset Team this year,” said Janet King, executive director of TCF. “He really connects with students thanks to his humor, compassion and contagious enthusiasm.”

Torchiana, shatters the stigma surrounding mental health, by speaking at middle and high schools, conferences, and universities across the country about her experiences. Her speech brings to light the silent stigma of mental health and build awareness about the serious effects of bullying and her presentations help individuals who are currently struggling to know they are not alone.

Blue Wave swimmers and divers invite the community to drop by select Darien locations to purchase tickets for the car wash, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 at Darien High School. Car wash tickets ($10 each) will be available for purchase on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept.

The Darien Police Department, in cooperation with the Depot Youth Center, is starting it’s tenth year of the “Cops and Kids Adventures” program. The program runs from September to May, meeting once, sometimes twice a month. The group of officers and kids will participate in “fun adventures” together, as well as community service projects that they will execute. Examples of past projects include a supply drive for Darien Human Services Household Closet, providing free smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors for residents in need, and Help My Starving Children. This year’s outreach program will consist of collecting for Darien Human Services Closet.
