Darien police reported nine vehicles parked outside eight homes in town were recently entered overnight, most of them from Tuesday to Wednesday, Jan. 19 to 20. Various items were taken from several of them. As usual, all of them were unlocked. Reported stolen were a “portable electronic device” valued at $100, a pair of prescription sunglasses, another pair of sunglasses, $80 in cash, a phone charger.

New Canaan police say a cat abandoned amid freezing temperatures at an Interstate 95 rest stop is in need of surgery and rehabilitation. — This article combines information and text published by NewCanaanite.com and information from New Canaan Patch. New Canaan Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm said she was contacted to assist the cat, even though the rest stop is in Darien, because the Darien animal control officer wasn’t available at the time, New Canaan Patch reported. Police were called in on Jan. 24.

Police who went to a home after they were called about a domestic incident involving a verbal dispute told that a man had pushed a person onto a couch. He was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. Darien Police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

A call about a verbal dispute was made to police at 9:17 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18. When police arrived, a 51-year-old man said he had been involved in an argument with the other person.

When you speak with multiple people purporting to be from various fraud departments of your bank, it sounds like a serious matter, and that’s what an elderly woman living on Gideon Lane seems to have thought after getting that call on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Because when she was told that she should withdraw $15,000 from her account, then drive to Stamford to get it transferred to Canada via a bitcoin machine, she did so. The people purportedly from People’s Bank also told her not to talk to anyone about the matter and said she should withdraw another $49,000 to send after she received another call the next morning. She didn’t send it.

Apparently no one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday night, Jan. 18, but one of the drivers was charged with driving under the influence and with committing a traffic violation, police said. Darien police gave this account of the incident and arrest, including accusations not proven in court:

Christopher Kuczo, 27, of Stamford, was driving a 2015 Subaru XV, a sport utility vehicle just before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Red Barn Road and Middlesex Road (a few hundred feet from the Stamford border) when the SUV came into contact with a 2016 BMW 528 being driven by another driver. Kuczo told police he was turning onto Red Barn Road when the accident happened. Kuczo’s vehicle received minor damage to its front passenger-side door, and the SUV’s airbag deployed.

A catalytic converter was stolen out from under a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck parked in the lower parking lot in front of Town Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 11, police said. The owner told police the car had been parked in the lot at 2 Renshaw Road between between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. When he drove away, he noticed the part was missing, he told police. No other thefts were reported in the area at that time, according to police.

Two envelopes, each holding a check, were stolen Monday, Jan. 10, from the mailbox outside a home on Bittersweet Lane, a man told Darien police. The man spoke to police early that afternoon and said he put both envelopes in his mailbox at about 7:30 a.m. that day. At 9:30 a.m., he noticed the mailbox door was open, which seemed suspicious to him. He called his mail carrier directly, police said they were told, and the mail carrier said the mail on that street hadn’t been picked up yet.

A jacket was the only item reported stolen overnight Jan. 10 to 11 from unlocked vehicles parked outside three homes on Five Mile River Road, according to police. Darien police received three reports on Tuesday, Jan. 11 about vehicles entered overnight on the Tokeneke street. One resident told police that at 12 midnight he saw the inside lights on in his 2021 Ford, 2016 Range Rover and 2021 Dodge.

One person was injured by an explosion late Sunday morning in a building near the bowling area at Wee Burn Country Club, police said. “It was reported that one individual was injured and transported to the hospital” by Darien Emergency Services-Post 53, the Darien police news release said. No information on the extent of the person’s injuries, if any, was provided by police, nor that person’s condition. A witness reported hearing a loud explosion in the bowling area, police said. Police and firefighters from Noroton Heights Fire Department were called to the scene at 11:04 a.m. The building had already been evacuated before first responders arrived.

A 32-year-old man was found asleep in the middle of one of the intersections of Rings End Road and Harbor Road at about 1:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 10, Darien police said. When he was given breath tests almost an hour later, police said, the results were nearly three times the legally allowed alcohol content in his blood, according to police. When police arrived at the scene in response to the 1:37 a.m. report, they saw a Honda Odyssey stopped in the intersection with the driver, Ramro Munoz of Trumbull, slumped against the driver’s side window.

When a woman living on Hollow Tree Ridge Road checked her mailbox on Wednesday, Jan. 5, she found it open and empty, although a package had been delivered, according to the U.S. Postal Service. The woman reported the incident to police at 1:39 p.m. that day. According to USPS delivery tracking information (which you can get online, here), she said, a package was delivered to her at 7:57 p.m. two days before, on Monday, Jan. 3.

A 24-year-old man was charged with driving while under the influence Saturday after a police officer saw his car go over the double yellow line on the Post Road near Noroton Avenue, police said. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

At 2:32 a.m., the officer saw the vehicle being driven west. (Police didn’t say whether the vehicle was a car, SUV or truck). After seeing the vehicle cross the yellow lines, the officer stopped it. The driver had slurred speech, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol.

A vehicle drove on the field next to Hindley School, leaving tire tracks and hitting a light post, causing it to lean over. The incident happened sometime before 10:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, when the police officer arrived. White transfer paint was left on the post, and plastic car pieces (including one with a Volvo stamp) were on the ground nearby. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them at (203) 662-5300.

A 26-year-old woman has just been arrested on larceny and identity theft charges after employee paychecks were stolen at Woodway Country Club just over a year ago, and her bank account was used to cash the stolen checks, police said. Darien police gave this account of the incident and investigation, including accusations not proven in court:

Several paychecks and some Amazon gift cards were missing in the theft at the country club on Hoyt Street, reported to police on Dec. 16, 2020. Darien police detectives watched video surveillance records showing “the suspect and vehicle used in the incident,” the police news release said. The news release didn’t directly say the suspect was Marleny Nunez of Perry Street in Stamford, the woman they arrested on Sunday.

A 35-year-old woman driving on West Avenue at 6:20 p.m. on New Year’s Eve struck guardrail, then drove off, police said. Soon afterward, she was charged with driving while under the influence. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

Police went to West Avenue near the two intersections of West and Holmes Avenues after witnesses called them to the scene. The police news release didn’t say how they contacted the driver, a resident of Glenbrook Road in Stamford. While speaking with the woman, police smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage.
