Here’s the low down on what’s up around town:

Pre-K students at Methodist Family Center Preschool recently enjoyed a visit from Elizabeth Merow, Community Outreach Manager at The Connecticut Humane Society, and several of her furry friends. Through games and interactive exercises, the children learned about the preferred foods and habitats of different animals, and how each like to be touched and cared for. To thank Ms. Merow for spending time with them, the class presented her with items to be donated to pets at a local animal shelter. “This was such a special event for our students, from start to finish. They worked so hard to collect items from the Humane Society’s Wish List, and then were rewarded with such an engaging and educational experience.

Twitter and One Man’s Complaint Get Results: Walk Signal Replaced at Tokeneke School

Twitter and other social media platforms are used as ways to influence government decisions all the time, too often with snark, insults, swearing and nasty comments. This is a totally different kind of story of one man’s success in getting results here on Darien. Everyone was polite (which didn’t stop the man from communicating his frustration and concern), and the town’s a bit better off as a result — and Tokeneke children who cross the street by the school appear to be a bit safer, along with anyone else trying to cross the street there. Here’s how it went:

Remember: Set Your Clock Back for the End of Daylight Savings Time

With Daylight Savings Time ending at 2 a.m. Sunday, set your clocks to “fall back” an hour either late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Car clocks have become easier, and you won’t have to change the time on your iPhone, but your stove and microwave clocks likely need adjusting, and is there one on your coffeemaker? This Web page has “tried to identify every time-keeping device you might have that requires manual attention.” And this is the time that many fire departments suggest you change the batteries on your smoke detectors. No time like the present.

XL Catlin, a global property and casualty insurance company with an office in Stamford’s South End, has awarded an $8,000 grant to Person-to-Person, which the agency will use for its scholarship program. Many of the students receiving scholarships are the first in their families to attend college, said Ceci Maher, executive director of the charity. A total of 80 percent of the students P2P helps go on to graduate from college — a rate  a well above the national average of 26 percent for college students from low-income households, according to P2P. Not only is the company giving money, but employees from XL Catlin regularly volunteer at Person-to-Person. ***

After Family Tragedies, GoFundMe Campaign Set Up for Poth Family

The Poth family, formerly longtime Darien residents, has been going through two traumatic incidents, with the death of Christopher Poth earlier this month and an accident involving his daughter, Charlotte, late last year. Now a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help family members with medical expenses, funeral costs and basic everyday needs. “Chris did not have life insurance, and the family is inheriting the debts he carried,” family friend Mary Manning wrote on the GoFundme.com website. “I am asking all of those who know and love the Poths to help them get through this terrifying time in their lives.” Christopher Poth’s obituary provided a link to the GoFundMe campaign, which was first posted on Wednesday, and as of early Sunday afternoon had raised less than $1,000 of its $65,000 goal.

What’s up from all around town and a bit beyond Darien — notable news notes:

The Darien town government closed on its purchase of 41 Hecker Ave., a  1.2-acre tract which will become open space on the northern side of Spring Grove Cemetery. After a long delay, the town bought the land from the cemetery on June 29, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said at Monday’s Board of Selectmen meeting. “I want to thank the Darien Land Trust for this small but very unique public/private partnership to preserve the 1.2 acres,” she said. “I appreciate the patience and generosity of the Spring Grove Cemetery board for their land offering and for their patience over the last four years. “We began this process in March of 2013, believe it or not, and it took us all that time to work through the town approvals and grant funding process, but we have it, and we will discuss next year what, if anything, we want to do with it.”
