Tax Counseling Available Through April 15 at Darien Library

The no cost, full-service VITA Tax-Aide program returns to Darien Library this year with a few changes to ensure safety for all. — an announcement from Darien Library

The service, with special attention to senior and low to moderate income households, includes an easy-to-use virtual filing system that allows users to work with IRS-certified tax preparers from home. There will be two options to access the service: an all-virtual method whereby clients will provide their information via a secure internet site and an on-site counseling method at the Library. On-site counseling at Darien Library began on Monday and end on Friday, April 15. Community members can register for the VITA program and find more information online, here, or call 860-590-8910 to book their appointment in advance.

Catalytic Converter Stolen from Pickup Truck on a Weekday Afternoon at Town Hall Parking Lot

A catalytic converter was stolen out from under a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck parked in the lower parking lot in front of Town Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 11, police said. The owner told police the car had been parked in the lot at 2 Renshaw Road between  between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. When he drove away, he noticed the part was missing, he told police. No other thefts were reported in the area at that time, according to police.

Theft From a Mailbox Reported on Bittersweet Lane

Two envelopes, each holding a check, were stolen Monday, Jan. 10, from the mailbox outside a home on Bittersweet Lane, a man told Darien police. The man spoke to police early that afternoon and said he put both envelopes in his mailbox at about 7:30 a.m. that day. At 9:30 a.m., he noticed the mailbox door was open, which seemed suspicious to him. He called his mail carrier directly, police said they were told, and the mail carrier said the mail on that street hadn’t been picked up yet.

Unlocked Vehicles Entered Overnight, Jan 10 to 11 on Five Mile River Road

A jacket was the only item reported stolen overnight Jan. 10 to 11 from unlocked vehicles parked outside three homes on Five Mile River Road, according to police. Darien police received three reports on Tuesday, Jan. 11 about vehicles entered overnight on the Tokeneke street. One resident told police that at 12 midnight he saw the inside lights on in his 2021 Ford, 2016 Range Rover and 2021 Dodge.

Explosion on Sunday at Wee Burn Country Club Building Sends One Person to Hospital

One person was injured by an explosion late Sunday morning in a building near the bowling area at Wee Burn Country Club, police said. “It was reported that one individual was injured and transported to the hospital” by Darien Emergency Services-Post 53, the Darien police news release said. No information on the extent of the person’s injuries, if any, was provided by police, nor that person’s condition. A witness reported hearing a loud explosion in the bowling area, police said. Police and firefighters from Noroton Heights Fire Department were called to the scene at 11:04 a.m. The building had already been evacuated before first responders arrived.

The team finished with a 126.65 to beat Wilton and New Canaan — in person this year rather than virtually, which meant that for the first time since the start of the epidemic, the athletes could cheer for their rivals in person, too.

Hindley Fourth Grader Christopher Li Wins First Place in International Piano Competition

Christopher Li, a 4th grader at Hindley School, came in first place at the 2021 Piano Star International Competition. In the event, live-streamed on Dec. 11, Christopher performed in Amateur Group B, competing against 37 players from 13 countries. The competition was judged by professional pianists and college professors. — an announcement from the Darien Public Schools Music Department

After performing in several preliminary rounds, he performed Golliwog’s Cakewalk by Debussy in the Grand Finals.  Christopher was awarded $200 in prize money.

The Darien Health Department advises residents to test their homes for radon gas especially now that many families are spending more time at home due to COVID-19. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas that is found throughout the US. Most of the time, it is harmlessly dispersed in outdoor air, but it can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Exposure to elevated levels of radon has been shown to cause lung damage and cancer in humans.
