Karen Marr obit

Karen Marr, 75, Physical Therapist, Active in Noroton Presbyterian Church, a Former P.E.O. President

Karen Peet Marr, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Oct. 13, after a brief and sudden illness.  The cause of death was Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (“C J D”).  She was 75. She was the daughter of Knox and Eleanor Peet of Utica, New York.  She graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York with a degree in physical therapy.  She was a Darien resident for over 40 years and worked as a physical therapist at the Stamford Hospital and the Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan. She was a dedicated member of the Noroton Presbyterian Church having served as a deacon, a Stephen Minister, a wedding coordinator and on various other committees.  She was active in P.E.O., a national philanthropic organization that raises scholarships for women, and served as president for several years. She is survived by John, her husband of 52 years; her daughter, Julie Monroe (Cory), of Wellesley, Massachusetts; her son, Todd Marr (Griffin), of Darien; her brother, David Peet, of Utica, New York; and her seven beloved grandchildren.

Daniel Hugh O’Brien, a lifelong resident of Darien, passed away peacefully on Oct. 21, 2021. He was 83. Born on Nov 10, 1937, he was the son of the late Mary and Jeremiah O’Brien. After graduating Darien High School in 1956, Daniel proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps for three years, from 1958 to 1961, as a corporal stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

Anne Shea Cagnina died peacefully on Oct. 4 at her home in Mystic, with her family by her side. The sole child of Thomas D. and Irene Pommerer Shea, Anne was born on March 28, 1931, and raised in New York City. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a Bachelor of Arts degree in math. Anne began her career at Metropolitan Life, and then worked as a programmer at Computer Usage Corporation and GE.

Victor F. “Butch” Domikis, Jr.of New Britain, passed away Tuesday Oct. 12, at Autumn Lake Health Center in New Britain. He was 70. Born on July 23, 1951 in New Britain, he was a former Darien resident, moving back to New Britain 28 years ago. Butch was a veterinary tech at two veterinarian locations — in Norwalk and Stamford.

John Austin Clark, a former resident of Darien, died Oct. 8 at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home in Greenwich. He passed away in his sleep due to complications from a series of strokes. John was 85. He grew up in East Orange, New Jersey, as the only child of Ralph and Lettie Clark.

Susan Elizabeth Moore Hart quietly departed her life on the morning of September 18. She was 104. She was born on August 11, 1917, in Southington, the youngest daughter of Daisy Ackart and Charles Martin Moore. Having skipped a grade in elementary school, she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. Though this was the end of her formal education, she never stopped learning.

He was born on Nov. 3, 1936 in Yonkers, New York, to Harold Guthrie and Mary Smith Guthrie. He graduated from Gorton High School in Yonkers, and in 1959 married the late Carol O’Connell.

Carole Hanks Ponichtera daughter of the late Lynn and Shirley Hanks passed away Sept. 23 from a long bout of cancer at her home in Mesa, Arizona. She was 68 and a former resident, graduating from Darien High School in 1972. Carole is survived by her three daughters: Verity Ponichtera of Arizona, Jesse (and Matt) Duran of Arizona, Rebecca Ponichtera of Oregon, and her granddaughter Zowie Ponichtera of Arizona and grandson Benny Duran. Also, surviving is her siblings Sharon Hanks Bixler of South Carolina, Margie Hanks of Norwalk, John Hanks of Norwalk, Bill Hanks of Arizona, and her aunt, Betty Richter from Darien.

Born July 5, 1968, in Darien, Bill graduated from Darien High School, Class of 1986, and was an oil technician at Petro Home Services for over 20 years. He was a member of the National Association for Amateur Radio (call sign KB1NCP) and a member and drummer in the The Port Chester American Legion Band.

Ruth Richardson Montgomery of Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away on Sept. 28, after a short illness. She was 91. A graduate of Adelphi Academy (1948) and Mount Holyoke College (1952), Ruth and her former husband, Robert, and their children lived in Nassau, Bahamas, from 1955 to 1964, in New Canaan from 1964 to 1975, and in Houston from 1975 to 1982. Thereafter, she lived in Darien with her late husband Sigmund John Montgomery, who predeceased her in 2017.
