Darien Library has been designated a five-star library by Library Journal for the 12th time in the 12 years that the magazine has been ranking libraries nationwide in its index. — an announcement from Darien Library

“A five-Star ranking by Library Journal is a recognition of how much the Darien community values and uses the library,” said library Director Alan Kirk Gray. “Out of more than 9,000 libraries nationwide, only 85 are ranked at the top. “That’s both a measure of Darien Library’s great staff and the overwhelming support of the community and our users. It’s also a spur for us to make sure we continue to provide great customer service every day.”

The ranking came in Library Journal’s list of American Star Libraries 2019, part of the LJ Index of Public Library Service.

Darien Library’s 5th Annual Novel Tea fundraiser on March 25 will feature novelist Lara Prescott, the New York Times bestselling author of The Secrets We Kept. — an announcement from Darien Library

“Prescott crafts a clock-and-dagger story of passion, espionage, and propaganda,” said The Wall Street Journal. 

The novel is inspired by a true CIA plot to infiltrate Soviet Russia through the greatest love story of the twentieth century: Doctor Zhivago. According to a recent “Note to Shelf” feature about book recommendations on the Darien Library website:

Darien Library’s Friday Night Feature film, “Blinded by the Light,” tells the story of a British teen of Pakistani descent whose life is altered when he’s introduced to the music of Bruce Springsteen. Darien Library presents interactive a cappella event on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3 with the University of Connecticut’s a cappella group A Minor. The concert is free and takes place from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the library. About A Minor

A Minor has been performing together for 15 years. They competed in the International Competition for Collegiate A Cappella in 2016 and 2018, and both times placed top 2 in quarter finals and made it to the semi finals.

How do you choose between sanity and happiness? On Wednesday afternoon, Cartoonist Rachel Lindsay will visit Darien Library to talk about her book, Rx: A Graphic Memoir. Lindsay has been called a powerful new voice in “graphic medicine,” a literary genre that uses comics to tell personal stories of illness and health. In her early 20s, Lindsay was living and working in New York City when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She took a job in advertising in order to secure healthcare coverage for her treatment.
