A couple of modern bits of technology just might help police catch an iPhone thief who also may have taken a credit or debit card from a 47-year-old Darien woman while she was at the library last week.

The iPhone has a “Find my iPhone” feature in it, which the victim had turned on and was able to trace to a spot not far from Darien Railroad Station, where the thief might have been headed. Often the “Find my iPhone” feature leads to a dead end — a street where the thief may be living, but not enough evidence to find the thief or exactly locate the phone.

Here’s where the second bit of modern tech comes in: The train station has video surveillance and the phone was there at a particular time.

The Case of the Purloined iPhone may still come to nothing, but there’s a chance.

Police gave this description of what the woman reported:

On Thursday, Dec. 15, the woman remembered she had the phone while she was taking her daughter to the library — she was using the GPS feature on the phone, a 6s model valued at $550.

She thought she locked the door of her vehicle when she and her daughter went in the library to return books. They were also in the children’s section. At some point at the library, she noticed she didn’t have her phone with her. She thought she might have left it at home. They were at the library for about 20 to 30 minutes.

When she still couldn’t find the phone, she called it, but didn’t hear a sound at home, and it wasn’t answered. When she used the “Find my iPhone” application, she found the device was on the Post Road, near Center Street.

Subsequent phone calls went directly to voice mail, and then the phone was shut off. The woman also lost a Chase credit card or debit card, but there was no activity on the card by the time the police report was filed.
