Police Investigating Theft of iPhone from Darien Library

A couple of modern bits of technology just might help police catch an iPhone thief who also may have taken a credit or debit card from a 47-year-old Darien woman while she was at the library last week. The iPhone has a “Find my iPhone” feature in it, which the victim had turned on and was able to trace to a spot not far from Darien Railroad Station, where the thief might have been headed. Often the “Find my iPhone” feature leads to a dead end — a street where the thief may be living, but not enough evidence to find the thief or exactly locate the phone. Here’s where the second bit of modern tech comes in: The train station has video surveillance and the phone was there at a particular time. The Case of the Purloined iPhone may still come to nothing, but there’s a chance.

A 19-year-old Darien woman forgot to pick up her smartphone from the counter when she bought something at a gas station convenience store late Saturday afternoon, and almost immediately she returned to the counter to get it — too late. Darien police described what happened with this account:

At about 4:15 p.m., the teenager bought something at the Standard gas station convenience store at 180 Noroton Ave. (at the southeast corner of Noroton and West avenues). She left the iPhone, valued at $600, on the counter, left the store, discovered she no longer had the phone and returned soon after. By 4:41 p.m., she called police to report the theft.
