Consuelo Meloy Nussbaum, 91, died peacefully Dec. 4, 2018 at Edgehill in Stamford. She was 91. The daughter of Thomas and Claire (Libby) Meloy, she was born Feb. 8, 1927, in Bronxville, New York.
Surrounded by her loving family, Elizabeth (Betty) Grant passed into God’s hands to join her husband on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018. She was 80. Betty was born in Salterstown, County Louth, Ireland on Aug. 10, 1938 to Patrick and Rose Ebbitt.
James J Whittaker (Jack) passed away on Oct. 31, 2018. He was 92. His family is asking that friends join them in a celebration of his life at the American Legion, 60 County St., Norwalk from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7.
Joan Marie Comerford, age 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Maplewood of Darien, after a long battle with cancer. She was born on July 26, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York to Stanley and Stella Sokolowski of Ozone Park, Queens. After graduating from St. Joseph’s College for Women, in Brooklyn, New York in 1954, she was named a Fulbright Scholar and studied in Cologne, Germany from 1954-1955.
Michael A. Wood of Darien passed away Nov. 25 following a long illness. He was 69. Born July 29, 1949 in Stamford, he was predeceased by his parents, George A. Wood Jr. and Wanda V. Stamatel. Mike grew up in Stamford and graduated from Rippowam High School in 1967, then attended J.M. Wright Technical School.
Leo W. Rogowski, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Nov. 28. Born in Stamford on Jan. 12, 1917, he was the son of the late Anthony and Helen Rogowski. Leo served in the Army during World War II.
Charles E. Stuart, 65, passed away on Nov. 24. Born May 19, 1953, Charles graduated from the Norwalk Public School system and worked at Yankee Gas/Eversource in Norwalk, The best father/grandfather anyone could ask for, Charlie was always there as a strong backbone to help any of his family or friends and made me the man I am today. He would happily drop anything just to make sure that his family was taken care of. The world was a better place knowing that Charlie was around.
Ruth Roberts Cheswick, a longtime resident of Darien and Hobe Sound, Florida, died Friday, Nov. 16 in Stamford. Born Dec. 15, 1926, she was the daughter of William A. Roberts and Anna Blom Roberts of Utica, New York. After her education at Sunset Avenue Elementary School and Utica Free Academy, Ruth went to Wellesley College to study economics.
Wilder D. Baker, Jr. of Darien passed away on Nov. 22 after a long struggle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was 86. Wilder was born Dec. 4, 1931 in Washington, DC the only child of naval officer Wilder D. Baker and Cora Barry Baker, the daughter of a Washington correspondent.
The Rev. Dale Paulsen, 67, pastor of a California Church and former youth pastor at Noroton Presbyterian Church, died in a car accident on Sunday evening, hours after he had announced his retirement after 23 years at the Morro Bay Presbyterian Church. Paulsen, who had been youth minister at the Noroton Church from 1977 to 1980, was walking in a nearby community when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver and killed, the San Luis Obispo County Tribune reported, citing a California Highway Patrol report. Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo County are on the Pacific coast, about half-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Tribune. Although the driver fled, California authorities later charged a 24-year-old woman who they said was driving a Toyota pickup truck while intoxicated.
Dale Paulsen was a wonderful husband and father who tragically passed away Nov. 18 at the age of 67. He was born in Iowa, and grew up in Southern California ( Go Lakers and Dodgers!) Dale served as a pastor, preaching about Jesus’ love and forgiveness for almost 45 years with his wonderful wife Emily. He was a youth pastor at heart, loving to play and laugh. He is survived by Emily and her three sons, their wives and seven grandchildren.
Carl A. “Cappy” Yarnold passed away on Nov. 20. He was 71. Born on June 29, 1947 in Haverhill, New Hampshire, Cappy grew up in Darien, where he graduated from Darien High School in 1965. He enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier, USS Essex.
Ann Leonard Reitz, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, died on Thursday, Nov. 15, in Oxford, Ohio. She was 82. “Nan” was born March 16, 1936 outside of Washington, D.C., until her father’s job at the United Nations took the family to New York City. A graduate of Cornell and Radcliffe, Nan married her husband Bart in 1961, and they moved to the town of Wyoming, Ohio in 1967, where they lived (with stops in Evanston, Illinois and Darien, Connecticut) until this summer. Nan received her PhD in English literature from the University of Cincinnati and went on to teach in that department from 1985 to 1999. Complications from Alzheimer’s prompted a move to Oxford to be closer to family.
Robert L. Eldredge, a long time Darien resident, died peacefully in his home Wednesday, Nov. 14, surrounded by loved ones. Robert “Bob,” or “Bunny” as he was often known, was the husband of the late Nancy H. Eldredge. Robert was born, Aug. 27, 1934 to the late Wilbur and Mary Margaret Eldredge in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Suzanne Jacobs passed away peacefully on Nov. 14, 2018 at VNA Hospice House of Vero Beach, surrounded by her loving family.
Suzanne was born Jan. 22, 1935 in Hollywood, California, to Mary Frances and Eugene Brooks. After the death of her father, when Suzanne was 10, she moved to Fremont, Nebraska with her mother and younger sister, Mary Lou. In Fremont, Suzanne eventually taught and performed dance at her mother’s dance studio for many years.
