A 54-year-old nephew at his aunt’s home on Sunday, Jan. 17, pushed over some furniture and pulled off a blanket that she was wrapped up in, causing her to fall from her couch to the floor, police said.
Darien police issued the man a summons charging him with disorderly conduct.
Darien police described the matter with this account (including accusations not proven in court):
At about 9:30 p.m., police received a call from a neighbor of the Darien woman to complain about a loud argument coming from the woman’s home. When police arrived, the woman told them she had an argument with her nephew, a Stamford resident, who had become very angry and started yelling.
She said her nephew had been under a lot of stress and the two had argued about how much she had been supporting him. At one point, while he was in the kitchen and she was lying on a couch in the living room, he picked up a stand-alone cabinet and threw it to the floor, she said.
At another point, as she lay on the couch, he grabbed a blanket the woman was wrapped in and pulled it off her, which resulted in her falling to the floor. She said she didn’t think he realized she was wrapped up in it, rather than just lying under it.
The nephew then took her cell phone and left her home, although he returned shortly afterward and apologized for his behavior. He returned her phone, fixed the cabinet and put it back. He had never acted this way before, and she wasn’t in any fear that he would hurt her, the aunt told police.
After the man left, police arrived and spoke with the woman. They tried calling the nephew but got no response, then visited his home and spoke with him.
The man said he threw the cabinet down because he had tripped on it, then pushed it to get it out of his way, and it broke. He also admitted to pulling the blanket, but only meant to pull it off and didn’t realize his aunt was wrapped in it.
He said he didn’t realize the phone was in his hands when he left his aunts house, and when he did realize it, he returned it.
The man was issued a summons for disorderly conduct, without a bond, and was told to be in State Superior Court in Stamford on Tuesday, Jan. 19. His next court date is Feb. 23.
