Alice Knotts Cooney, 92, of Darien and Waldoboro, Maine, died peacefully at her home in Waldoboro on Sept. 30, 2016. Born in Tacoma, Wash., on Nov. 17, 1923, she was the daughter of Gilbert Lloyd Knotts and Alice McCoy Knotts. She grew up in Portland and Falmouth, Maine and graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She taught at the Knox School, Cooperstown, N.Y., Buckley Country Day, Great Neck, N.Y., and the Day School in New Haven.

Carlyn Elizabeth Legge Crane, 59, of Westbrook, died peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 30. Born in Northfield, Vt., to William R. and Gail Price Legge, Carlyn spent her first 12 years in Norwalk and Darien before her family moved to Cumberland Foreside, Maine. A 1975 graduate of Greely High School in Cumberland, Carlyn earned a degree in accounting from Casco Bay College. She worked for many years in guest reception and as a night auditor at Holiday Inn Downtown Portland, and had long-term positions with the Greater Portland Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and various financial service companies.

Lee Arnold Colbath, 92, passed away peacefully at home Sept. 18 in Auburn, Maine. He was born Nov. 16, 1923 in Howland, Maine to Lee and Helen Colbath. Lee grew up during the Depression and, after graduating high school, served in the European Theater during WWII. He was a member of the 12th Armored Division “The Hellcats,” 7th U.S. Army and awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle.

Patty will be remembered by her friends and family for her genuine interest in other people, her sense of optimism and fairness, her wonderful laugh and sense of humor, her passion for racquet sports, international travel, entertaining, and her love of her extended family. Born to Fredrick and Ruth Wilson in Bronxville, New York on Feb. 1, 1932, she was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John M. Scott, and first husband, Stanley R. Westberg.

Peter Putnam Miller of Rowayton passed away Sept. 26. He was 78. Peter was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Robert and Delores Miller. Peter’s peripatetic life journey began in Fair Lawn, N.J., where he worked as a soda jerk and earned distinction as one of the last Americans to receive the Hog and Pork Production Merit Badge from the Boy Scouts of America. When he was 13 years old, Peter moved to Morocco with his parents and brother, David; there, his father worked as an engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mary Mulligan, a long time Darien resident, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22 at her daughter’s house in Greenwich after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born the oldest of 10 children on May 13, 1933 in Kiltimagh County Mayo, Ireland to Patrick and Mary McDonagh. Mary immigrated to the United States in 1952. She worked as a nanny for a family in New York City and for several families in Darien.

Dorothy Spalding, 80, passed away, Sept. 14, 2016, at her home in Florida. She was born in Ardsley, N.Y., April 16, 1936 to Helen and Kenneth McPhee. Dorothy grew up in New York with a close family before moving with her husband, William Spalding, to Darien. She later settled in Rowayton, on Belle Island and Pine Point, for nearly forty years, with many summers shared with extended family in a beach house in Milford.

Audrey Josephine Smith Dutcher, a long-time resident of Closter, passed away at her home in Darien on Sept. 22. She was three months shy of her 100th birthday. A daughter of Thomas Arthur Smith and Josephine Blanche Navarro Smith, Audrey was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., but the family moved to Closter before she turned five. Throughout her life Audrey displayed an almost limitless curiosity and thirst for learning.

Elisabetta Josephina Wolf, 89, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016 at the Long Ridge Post Acute Care of Stamford. She was born in Stamford on Oct. 29, 1926 to the late Joseph and Sylvia Sylvestre Lorenti. Elisabetta worked at the United Methodist Church Nursery School as a child care provider, as well as secretarial work, bookkeeping and also a CNA. She was a graduate of Stamford High School and attended Short’s Business School for two years.
