In a rich town where many leave their cars unlocked overnight, and sometimes their homes, some burglar decided to break into Jake’s Place, the modest little restaurant at the corner of Noroton Avenue and Ledge Road.

An employee arriving for work at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, noticed glass on the floor and a broken side window; police were called.

A blue bank bag with $25 in dimes, $10 in nickels and $75 in quarters was taken. A small safe nearby appeared to have been rifled through, but it seemed nothing was taken. Police detectives processed the scene, looking for evidence.

A screen was removed from a window in the back of the restaurant, but no entry was gained that way, and it appeared that a light bulb had been removed from an outdoor light.

The back door was not locked when employees arrived, and that was likely the way that the thief or thieves left. Police were not given an estimated value on the damage to the window.

Almost every other theft reported to Darien police, including many shoplifting reports, involves more money than the $145 looted in this case, and for a lot less effort.
