A tanker truck on fire on the shoulder of Interstate 95 southbound-traffic lanes in Darien shut down that side of the highway for roughly half an hour Wednesday between 1 and 2 p.m.

Noroton Heights Fire Department tweeted at 1:35 p.m.: “I-95 Exit 13 south will be opening shorty after a truck fire. Use caution in the area”

The Connecticut Department of Transportation traffic cam on the scene shows vehicles passing it on the highway as of 1:46 p.m.

Police advised drivers to stay away from the area and find an alternate route.

The DOT says southbound traffic on the highway was backed up to Exit 17 as of 1:15 p.m. A traffic camera appeared to show the truck is on the shoulder of the road just past the southbound-lanes Exit 13, but the southbound-traffic side of the highway was empty of traffic between Exits 14 and 11.

Here’s the Transportation Department camera’s live feed of the scene (you can also watch it here, on the DOT’s website):

As of 1:50 p.m., the wreck of the tanker truck looks like this (in an image taken from the DOT traffic cam). Firefighters have put out the fire and cleanup appears to be starting:
