Joseph P DiRollo was called to heaven on March 5, 2021 He was 92. A resident of Norwalk for 61 years, Joe was a small business owner in Darien for 21 years and 10 years in Greenwich. Born on Feb. 18, 1929 in Mamaroneck, New York, to Theresa and Peter DiRollo. Joe grew up with four sisters and four brothers.
Jay B. Kane passed away March 15. He was 89. Jay was born on June 4, 1931 in the home of his grandparents at 125 Buckingham Road in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Margaret Brassler Kane and Arthur Ferris Kane. When he was a child, Jay accompanied his parents to museums where his mother, a prominent sculptor, exhibited her work.
Dora Spielmann of Needham, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on March 14 after a long and courageous battle with dementia. She was born in Lima, Peru but spent a great part of her life in New York City and Darien. Dora was a very active volunteer in the Darien school system, the DCA Garden Club and the former Tots N’ Teens consignment shop. But most of all, she was a loving, devoted and caring person to family and friends. Dora is survived by Josef, her loving husband of 55 years; her son, Martin, and his wife, Suzanne McLaughlin, and their children, Claire, Joseph, Peter and Anna.
David H. Crandall died peacefully on March 13 with family by his side. He was 89. Born in Oswego, New York, Dave raised his family in Darien where he was exceptionally active in the life of the community, from church vestry member to volunteer firefighter. He also served on various town committees, ultimately becoming chairman of the Darien Board of Finance. After graduating from Colgate University in 1953 and then serving as a captain in the Marine Corps, Dave met Jane Fox in New York City.
Katharin Henrietta Baker passed away peacefully at Notre Dame Convalescent Home on March 6, 2021. She was born on June 10, 1924 in Butte, Montana to Katharin and William Harvey. She is predeceased by her husband, James M. Baker, and her brother, William Harvey. Katharin grew up in rural Montana. She attended Montana School of Mines.
Ann “Daisy” Moylan Connell, 88, of Norwalk, passed away Friday, March 5 at her home, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on Aug. 31, 1932, she was the only daughter of the late Hugh Michael Moylan and Marie Dermody Moylan. Ann graduated in 1954 from Notre Dame College of Staten Island, New York with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She taught at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island and with the New York City Public School System, retiring in 1965.
Margaret “Margie” Mitchell Mather, 83, died March 3 at Wake Robin Retirement Community surrounded by her family. Born Feb. 1, 1938 in Montpelier, Vermont, she was the daughter of Robert Watson Mitchell and Rita Christina Morrissey, who died in 1945. After her mother’s death, her father married Virginia Wright Buckingham. She grew up in Rutland, Vermont and attended public schools.
Charles E. Campbell III, 73 of Hopkinton, Massachusetts and formerly of Holliston, Massachusetts passed away unexpectedly on March 3. Charles (Chuck) was born on August 8, 1947 in Berlin, Germany, son of Charles E. Campbell Jr. and Marion Doyle Campbell. Chuck leaves behind his beloved wife of 47 years, Carolyn (Degler) Campbell, his brother, John of West Palm Beach and his nephew, Alex of California. His late sister was Marion Wade Campbell. He and his family moved to the United States in 1953, settling in Connecticut.
Charles Samuel Macaluso of Darien and Kiawah Island, South Carolina died on Feb. 22 at the age of 77. Affectionately known to friends and family as Mac, Charles was a selfless man of generous spirit, intellectual curiosity and often, irreverent humor. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Samuel and Josephine Macaluso. A graduate of Siena College and Rutgers University, he held masters degrees in English and public administration.
Barbara Ann Kelley, a longtime resident of Southport on the Mill River, passed away on Jan. 27, as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s. She was a regal 95. Barbara was born on Dec. 19, 1925 to Cal and Bessie Baze in Grosse Point, Michigan, where she also grew up.
George Wulf Wetzell, 84, died peacefully on Feb. 9, 2021 surrounded by family. The son of the late Horace and Gerda Wetzell of Harrison, New York, George was born on Sept. 18, 1936 in Shanghai, where his father owned a U.S. trading company. His family then moved to Harrison in 1949.
Jennifer Austin James, 77, passed away on Jan. 15 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington after a brief illness. Born to Dorothy J. Muller of Darien and Francis W. James of Lexington, Massachusetts, Jennifer was a Connecticut native and spent her entire youth living in Darien. Known to her friends as “Jef,” she attended Darien public schools and then continued on to Marietta College in Ohio. In 1966 she married her high school sweetheart from Greenwich.
David McGill Marshman, 20-year resident of Venice, Florida, died in his sleep on Jan. 7. He was 69. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald McGill and Ann Lane Marshman of Darien, Connecticut. David was born on Feb.
Elizabeth F. King (a.k.a. Betty Rae King) of Celebration, Florida died on Jan. 2 at 3:30 p.m. due to a stroke. She was 84 years old. Betty Rae was born in West Hartford, on July 8, 1936. She studied education at Saint Joseph’s College in West Hartford and went on to become an elementary school teacher.
Margaret (Peggy) Upton, 87, a resident of Manchester Center, Vermont and formerly of Nebraska and Darien, passed away Nov. 27, 2020 at Equinox Terrace in Manchester. Peggy was born in Gothenburg, Nebraska on June 21, 1933 the daughter of the late Oscar and Elenora Block Swanson. She attended local schools and did her undergraduate studies at Iowa State and Stanford University. She worked in the real estate business and managed the Stratton Mountain Employee Store.
