The Darien Arts Center is announcing the return of its smartphone photography contest fundraiser, Pic Darien. In 2017, the contest garnered over 300 entries, with submissions from all ages. This year, contestants may submit their smartphone photos for cash prizes in 6 categories at darienarts.org until May 16. — an announcement from Darien Arts Center

The contest is open to all; there are no age restrictions and contestants are not required to live in Darien.  

Participants may enter either as a student, age 17 and under, or as an adult, age 18 and over, in one of six themed prize categories including People and Pets, Landscape and Nature, Travel: Near and Far, Food, Humor and Abstract.

The Darien Arts Center is announcing the return of its annual smartphone photo contest, Pic Darien, which will be accepting entries at the DAC website from April 2 through May 16. Adults (18 and up) and Students (17 and under) may submit their smartphone photos for cash prizes in 6 categories: People and Pets; Landscape and Nature; Travel: Near and Far; Food; Humor and Abstract. The 2018 contest is open to all; there are no age restrictions and contestants are not required to live in Darien. All entries will be presented in a slideshow at a June 1st Award and Reveal Reception in the DAC Weatherstone Studio located at 2 Renshaw Road, behind the Darien Town Hall. The Darien Arts Center is currently seeking an experienced, friendly, optimistic, articulate, self-motivated individual for a full time office manager position. Candidate must have strong interpersonal, organizational, computer and 5-plus years bookkeeping experience. Proficiency in project management, database management, QuickBooks, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Word a must. DAC promotes the arts to all ages, offering classes, recitals, and performances in dance, music, theatre and visual arts.

The popular showcase of talent, So We Think We Can Dance is back for its seventh year at the Darien Arts Center, where the student-run production has sold-out audiences for the past six years. Totally produced by DAC dance student volunteers, ages 10 to 18, the show returns to the DAC Weatherstone Studio with performances on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

DAC dance students manage all stages of creation and execution, and choreograph and perform approximately 17 dances that encompass many different styles of dance. The DAC dance program provides dedicated students a one of kind opportunity, to produce a show from start to finish.

The Nutcracker comes to life as the Darien Arts Center’s (darienarts.org) dance companies join together to enchant audiences of all ages at their annual production, “Scenes from the Nutcracker.” This Tchaikovsky holiday classic is abbreviated to an hour-long narrated show, specifically geared for young audiences. Children get to sit up close and are invited to meet and greet the characters after the performance. ___________

The show, a Darien favorite since 2002, provides an appealing introduction to attending dance performances for the younger set. “The Nutcracker was written for children,” says DAC Dance Director and show choreographer Bonnie Gombos.

Darien Arts Center Stage is proud to announce its production of the comedy, Sylvia, a comedy in which a dog becomes a major bone of contention between a husband and wife. The play by A. R. Gurney will run from Nov. 3 to 11. The cast includes Jacquie Carlsen, David Jackins, and Giovanna Olcese of Norwalk and Susan Stanton of Westport. Christian Amato is director.

Beatles Night, a fun-filled evening produced by Darien Arts Center Stage, promises to deliver a trip back in time to re-live the Beatles frenzy of 1964. The one-night event takes place at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30 in Darien Arts Center’s Weatherstone Studio. The Darien Arts Center Stage production features a live band of local musicians performing favorites made popular by the Fab Four. The Arts Center’s first Beatles Night in 2016 quickly sold out and the DAC is staging this year’s event in response to many requests for a repeat performance.

Auditions for the fall DAC Stage production of Sylvia by A.R. Gurney are being held on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the DAC Weatherstone Studio. If callbacks are necessary they will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m.

See the Darien Arts Center’s latest offerings at DAC Open House on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The annual Open House gives newcomers, friends of current students and those unfamiliar with the DAC, the opportunity to visit its facilities that include a black box theatre, a large Visual Arts Studio and one of the best dance spaces in Fairfield County. All ages are invited to participate in free mini-classes in dance, visual arts and kids’ theatre, find out about programs, meet DAC board members and faculty, and enjoy music performed by DAC music students and teachers. Information will be provided that includes participation and volunteer opportunities for those interested in their community theatre group, DAC Stage, and their popular fundraiser, Darien’s Got Talent, returning in 2018. Complimentary mini-classes at the Open House include preschool hip-hop dance, martial arts, theatre games, and a printmaking project for all ages.

‘An Evening Under the Stars’ Gala to Benefit the Darien Arts Center

The Darien Arts Center invites the community to support its first-ever gala fundraiser, An Evening Under the Stars, on Saturday, June 24. The cocktail reception will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the DAC’s Weatherstone Studio and Garden at 2 Renshaw Road, behind the Town Hall. The benefit will feature live entertainment from Lew and Mary Green’s Ragtime Evolution, as well as cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a raffle. Proceeds from An Evening Under the Stars will benefit the DAC, which relies solely on donations, ticket sales, tuitions and grants for funding. Over 6,000 individuals participate in programs and attend performances at the DAC annually, with over 1000 students from toddlers to seniors taking classes in dance, visual arts, music, theatre, and martial arts.
