Susan Fehlinger of Bridgeport won Best in Show for her oil painting, Beach Cottage. Award winning artist and instructor Will McCarthy selected the winners from almost 80 entries. Exhibit chairs were Sandy Mills of Norwalk and Elaine Pagano of the Rowayton section of Norwalk.

Art, music and food combine this weekend at the Norwalk Arts Festival will be the location for the Norwalk Arts Festival on June 23 and 24, 2018. The festival is free and open to the public from 10 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A juried fine art and fine craft festival, the sixth annual event at Mathews Park will bring over 85 of the country’s top fine artists and crafts people to Fairfield County, along with several outstanding performing artists. The festival includes live musical performances, poetry on both days, as well as, free fun family activities, and a variety of food. The children’s “Art Project”, a creative arts area, sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama, will round out the fun for visiting families.

Darien Student Wins 1st Place in Oils Category, Another Darienite Gets 3rd Place for Photo in Rowayton Art Exhibit

“Dual Nature,” a painting by Lucy Armstrong, a student in Darien, has won first place in the oil painting category of  the “Focus Under Forty” exhibit and arts competition at Rowayton Arts Center. Amit Cherbuchaw also of Darien won 3rd Place the Color Photography, “Joy.” Lucy will be one of the featured artists in the upcoming, Artists Talk on Wednesday night at RAC.  

The show is for artists from the ages of 16 to 39, and it runs through this Sunday, June  24 (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day). Armstrong will be part of the panel discussion on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. where the young artists will talk about their art and what inspires it.

Artwalk, an evening of art-related, free events as well as live music and dance, takes place from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 22 on several blocks in downtown Stamford. You can stroll through Stamford’s downtown streets and visit seven galleries, where you can meet participating artists (see the list below). Darien High School Becomes Large Art Gallery for Student Works

Darien High School felt more like an art museum Monday night as students, teachers and parents wandered hallways, open spaces, and corners of the Library for the annual 9th through 12th grade Art Show. The week-long show opened Monday and featured senior artists and those enrolled in Advanced Placement Art classes. In all, 1,200 pieces were collected from every student who had enrolled in an art course. They included a variety of drawings, ceramics, sculptures, photographs, and paintings. “This was a huge night for us,” said DHS teacher Jaclyn Sammis, who oversees the Art Department.

An award winning photographer, Nancy’s portfolio includes sea, land and tree scapes, staged and poetic photography; architecture of interest, such as barns, etc.; catalog and still photos.  

Her photographs have appeared in the Darien News; the Darien Times, The Resident, Country, Fine Gardening, and other newspapers and magazines. Nanci’s work has been on display at Darien Rowayton Bank, Darien Donut and Artists at Grove Street Plaza. She also has been a staff photographer for Darien Blue magazine covering feature families and local events, such as the Chili Challenge and Darien Old Timer’s Athletic Association.

During the month of January Atria Darien at 50 Ledge Road will showcase the works of Greenwich artist Maia Sreseli-Hodge, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4. Born and raised in the nation of Georgia, she started painting not long ago. Maia says she just creates art that reflects what she loves, what she feels, what she sees, what she imagines. “My canvas is a reflection of my feelings, my dreams, my observations and imaginations,” she said.

Darien native and local artist Peter Saverine will be showing and selling his latest paintings as well as autographed copies of his children’s book, Jenny’s Pennies—A Nantucket Tradition this Saturday and Sunday at the Fairfield Kiwanis Club’s 26th Annual Juried Arts and Crafts Show. Saverine paints scenes inspired by his life along coastal Fairfield County. Sometimes it’s a Wednesday evening ride by the beach when the youth sailing regatta is winding up before sunset. Other times it’s looking out at Greens Ledge Lighthouse from a Roton Point vantage or walking by Darien’s Rings End bridge.  

His color blending and simple subject matter has been called, “relaxing, happy, and nostalgic of summer days gone past.” Some of his work is on a smaller scale, which helps make it affordable for many rooms in a home or office.

Performing Arts Join the Artists at Grove Street Plaza on Saturday

Art will stand and sit on display Saturday for the annual show at Grove Street Plaza, but it will also dance and be heard. Ballet from Go Figure will be performed at noon (and give away grip socks while supplies last), followed by a 1 p.m. performance from a certified instructor from Club Pilates, which is opening soon in the former location of Panera Bread. (They’ll be giving away bottled water to visitors while supplies last.)

These are the latest additions to the performance schedule at the Darien arts festival, which features painters, photographers and other artists displaying their work, along with food for sale and, it appears, sunshine and temperatures getting up to 83 degrees (get that bottled water). “My goal is creating a free art event which everybody can come and enjoy,” said Darien artist Nobuku “Nobu” Miki, who organized the annual show. “I got live string music, flower arrangement show, magician, kids art show, kids French lesson from a native, and now I’ve added performance art.

You may also find a fine piece of art to buy and take home with you. Most of the work from this year’s 20 participating artists is for sale at $500 or less.
