An 18-year-old man was intoxicated when his vehicle struck a utility box on Scofield Farm Road sometime after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, Darien police said.
Police did not indicate he was injured in any way.
Darien police gave this further account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:
Police received a report about the accident at 11:17 p.m. The driver, Sebastian Urrea of Westport, told police he was lost when he tried to make a U-turn and lost control of the vehicle.
An officer who spoke with Urrea smelled an alcoholic beverage coming from him, so the driver was administered field sobriety tests, which he didn’t perform to an adequate standard. Police also found 8 ounces of marijuana in the vehicle.
At Darien Police Headquarters, Urrea took a breath test which showed his blood-alcohol content at 0.13 at 1:08 a.m., after the first test failed to register a blood-alcohol level.
Urrea, of Oakridge Farm Road in Westport, was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to drive on the right side of the road, using a cell phone while driving, possession of alcohol by an under-age person and possession of more than 5 ounces of marijuana.
He was released on a $500 cash bond and is scheduled to appear Sept. 9 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
