Police: DUI for Man, 38, Found Putting Trash in a Downtown Business Dumpster

When a police officer saw a man toss some garbage into the dumpster behind a business near the corner of the Post Road and Corbin Drive early Sunday morning, then start driving away, the officer stopped the vehicle and spoke with the man, police said. That led to the man’s arrest on a charge of driving while intoxicated, police said. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At about 1:11 a.m., the officer stopped the driver. When speaking with the man, a 38-year-old Stamford resident, the officer smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him. The man said he had been drinking earlier, but he gave varying accounts of how much he had. The driver failed to perform standard field sobriety tests adequately and was charged with driving while under the influence.

A Darien teenager, driving with a blood-alcohol amount well over the legal limit, hit a wall on the property of a Raymond Street resident early Sunday morning, then drove away in the heavily damaged vehicle, which had several flat tires, police said. Darien police described the incident and arrest with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Kent Hurtado, 18, of 72 Raymond St., Darien hit the wall on property not far from the other end of Raymond Street, near its intersection with Old Kings Highway North sometime before 12:30 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 25. As police went to the scene, they were told the vehicle, with heavy front-end damage and several flat tires, was leaving the scene. Police stopped the driver on Raymond Street.

When Darien police answered a call from Sedgwick Avenue about a car parked at the end of a resident’s driveway for 20 minutes, its engine running, they found a man slumped behind the wheel, unconscious, with four times the legal limit for blood-alcohol content, police said. Police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

At 8:24 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, police were called to the driveway of a home on Sedgewick Avenue, not far from Tilley Pond Park. A vehicle had been parked at the end of the driveway for 20 minutes, a resident said. Police found the vehicle was still running when they arrived.

Police: Woman, 28, Drove Under the Influence, Swerved on Hoyt Street

After watching a woman who didn’t stop for a stop sign, then swerved while driving an SUV north on Hoyt Street, crossing over the double yellow line, a Darien police officer stopped the driver and found she was behind the wheel while under the influence, police said. At 1:29 a.m., Monday, Oct. 15, a police officer saw a gray 2010 Toyota Rav4 fail to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of Middlesex Road and Hoyt Street, so the officer followed the vehicle as it headed north on Hoyt. As the officer watched, the SUV twice crossed the center line and swerved on the roadway. The officer stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Hoyt Street and Camp Avenue.

A man later found with cans of beer and narcotics crashed his vehicle and was found unconscious by police after his vehicle jumped the curb off the Darien High School loop roadway on Thursday, less than 20 minutes after school was let out, police said. [This article has been updated twice (as noted below).]

Police were called to the scene at 2:37 p.m., just 17 minutes after students were let out of school for the day. Nordin Farez, 39, was in a car with a 31-year-old Stamford man (who was not charged), and both were unconscious when Officer Bryan Wallman, the Police Department’s school resource officer, was the first from the department to arrive at the scene. Wallman is based at the school. Farez’s car had jumped the curb while on the school’s loop driveway and had come to rest, still running and with the shift in “Drive,” on the south side of the loop, against a guardrail.

A Brooklyn, NY man, now 43, had been dodging his required appearances in state Superior Court in Stamford for more than 18 years since his arrest on a driving-while-intoxicated charge in Darien, police said. Man, 50, Charged With Failure to Appear in Court for 24 Years After DUI Arrest at Age 26

On July 12, 1994, a man now living in North Carolina, then aged 26, was driving while intoxicated in Darien and got arrested for it, police allege. He didn’t show up for court at some point, police say, and his rearrest was ordered on Sept. 7, 1994, according to state court records. On Tuesday, June 12, Stamford police informed police in Darien that the man was in custody, and they asked whether Darien police would arrest him. Darien police did. The man is now 50, almost double the age he was then.

Police: DUI for Darien Man After Vehicle Crash Injures Passenger [UPDATE]

A passenger was injured and taken to a hospital late Sunday afternoon after a sport utility vehicle driven by 47-year-old Darien man crashed into a retaining wall at the Avalon Darien apartment complex, police said. The man, who lives at the complex, was charged with driving while under the influence, police said. [UPDATE: Police said the original time given for the report, 5:10 p.m., was wrong. The incident was called in to police at 12:57 a.m., Sunday, meaning the man was held or more than 27 hours.]

At 12:57 a.m., Sunday, June 3, police were called to the apartment complex at 137 Hollow Tree Ridge Road, where they found a dark-colored SUV that appeared to have jumped a curb and struck a retaining wall. Andrew Lester, the driver, got out of the SUV.

Police: DUI for 26-Year-Old Man at 2 AM on Interstate 95

A man driving in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Exit 10 was swerving from the center lane to the breakdown lane several times before a Darien police officer pulled over his car and later charged him with driving while under the influence, police said. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

The officer was on patrol and using the highway at about 2 a.m. Saturday, May 5 when he spotted a white 2014 Infinity Q50 swerving from lane to lane. After stopping the car and while speaking with the driver, the officer smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic drink. The driver, a 26-year-old Norwalk man, said he had been drinking that night. The driver couldn’t perform field sobriety tests to an acceptable standard, so he was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and failing to drive in the proper lane on a highway.

Police: DUI for Man, 64, Driving Slowly and Erratically on Old Kings Hwy North

A 64-year-old driver was reported to police as driving in an erratic way on Old Kings Highway North, near Goodwives Shopping Center on Palm Sunday evening, and then charged with driving while under the influence after officers themselves saw his driving, Darien police said. At 8:17 p.m., Sunday, March 25 someone called police to report the way a tan Chevrolet Silverado was being driven in the area. Officers dispatched to the area saw the car being driven very slowly through the shopping center parking lot. While following the car as it left the lot and headed east on Old Kings Highway North. the officer saw the driver make small abrupt movements and eventually cross outside the lane, over the double-yellow line at a curve in the road.
