In Just Minutes, Leaving Purse in Movie Theater Costs Woman the $200 That Was in It

A woman watching a movie with her daughter at Darien Playhouse on Friday left her purse behind when they got up to leave, and while she realized what happened even before she left the building and got the purse — $200 in it was already gone, she told police. UPDATE, Thursday: At Wednesday’s Police Commission meeting, Police Chief Raymond Osborne said credit cards were also taken from the purse. Here’s how police described what happened:

The mother and daughter watched a movie that started at 6 p.m., ending at 7:50. At that point, they left and visited the bathroom before leaving. The woman realized that she no longer had her purse with her.

A 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were found by police on Dec. 31 in possession of heroin, needles and a cell phone that had just been stolen from a downtown Darien business, according to police. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

An employee at the Verizon store at 1075 Post Road called police at 1:05 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 to tell them a phone had just been stolen from the store. The employee gave police a description of a young man and woman.

When a manager of Whole Foods Market went out to confront a 30-year-old man in the store parking lot on Saturday, Dec. 29 about some expensive food the man didn’t pay for, the man said he would go back into the store and pay, according to Darien police. But, they said, he didn’t — instead, he left. Police gave this further description of the incident in this account, including accusations not proven in court:

The manager, who contacted police at 8:50 a.m., said that she saw the man leaving the store after paying for some of the groceries he had with him, but not all. In fact, he hadn’t paid for about $196 in groceries, police were told.
