A Darien mother was arrested after she held a birthday party that included cases of beer and other alcoholic beverages for her son, who was under 21 years old, and his underage friends, police said. The woman, who had taken the car keys from attendees and told them they would have to get rides back home, said their parents knew about alcohol being served, according to police. When police questioned parents, they all denied they knew about the alcohol. Darien police described what happened in this announcement, including accusations not proven in court (quotes below are from the announcement):

At 10:37 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, police received a tip that there was under-age drinking at 237 Noroton Ave.

When Darien police were called to the public pier at Noroton Bay on a report of a young man screaming obscenities and throwing things around just after midnight on Sunday, it led to multiple charges against multiple family members related to at least two fights before arrests were made, according to police. The police account is complicated. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court (as noted below, it’s possible that two people, named “Victim 1” and “Victim 2” by police may be people referred to elsewhere in this account; there’s a further explanation of that in italics below):

At 12:18 a.m., police were called to the pier near the intersection of Nearwater Lane and Baywater Drive and heard a man screaming obscenities, as had been reported. They found a man, later identified as Charles Daley, 18, sitting on a cooler behind the concession stand at the pier. They could see he was upset.

Substance Abuse Meeting for Students About to Attend DHS and Parents

All Darien High School students involved in any extracurricular activity and their parents are now required to attend one of the few scheduled school meetings about the dangers of substance abuse. And there’s one scheduled on Monday night especially for students about to complete Grade 8 and enter high school, along with one of their parents or guardians. The school district will have more of these meetings over the summer, but school officials say the one on Monday is expected to be the easiest one for parents and kids to attend, since it’s unlikely to interfere with summer activities. The meeting takes place from 7:15 to 9 p.m. on June 11 in the Darien High School Auditorium. At 6 p.m. the same night, Grade 8 students are invited to the high school Gym to learn about the athletic program.

Darien Police: If Your Kids Are Drinking, Police May Charge You

At this time of year, the Darien Police Department typically sees an increase in the number of calls for gatherings where juveniles are consuming alcohol. This increase can be attributed to prom season, the end of the school year, and the return of college students to town. The Darien Police wanted to take this opportunity to remind parents and homeowners about the criminal consequences of allowing the consumption of alcohol by juveniles at their homes. — an announcement from Darien Police

Various social-host and underage-possession charges can be brought against any parent or homeowner who either; actively participates in allowing juveniles to possess or procure alcohol, or passively allows the possession/consumption to take place. Most people are aware that allowing kids to drink in their home is illegal, but many don’t realize that the law allows for charges to be brought in situations where the police feel parents “should” have known underage drinking is a potential.
