With deepest sorrow we announce that our son, Garrett William Finley, of Portland, Maine, died on June 15, 2022. He was 37. Garrett was born Nov. 4, 1984 in New York City and spent most of his childhood in Darien. He graduated from Oxford Academy in Westbrook, where he developed his love of photography and continued his love of music.
Judith (Judy) Pittman Tibbetts, a nearly 70-year resident of Darien, has recently passed. Born in Nebraska to the late Beatrice and Alfred Pittman, and raised in Chicago and Boston, Judy moved to Darien in the early 1950s after college (Principia) and marriage. She and her husband, Paul, and their two sons, Alfred and John, lived in a home they built in Delafield Island. They were also founding members of the Christian Science Church in Darien on the corner of the Post Road and Salt Box Lane. While her children were still quite young, Judy discovered a knack for selling real estate, arranging two sales before deciding to go into the business.
Louise “Scottie” Peebles Winter of Norwalk passed away peacefully on July 7. She was 94. Born in Stamford in January 1928 to the late Charles and Agnes Macdonald Peebles, who had recently immigrated from their native Scotland, Louise was raised in Stamford with her brother John and sister Millicent, where she graduated Stamford High School in 1945. In 1949, she earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate at Danbury State Teachers College, now Western Connecticut State University. Upon graduation, Louise taught elementary school in Darien for many years inclusive of a break while her children were young, through her retirement in 1992.
It is with great sadness and much love that the family of Pia DeLuca, 82, announces her peaceful passing on July 9, 2022. Pia was born on Jan. 24, 1940 to the late Augusto and Lucia Rizzi D’Urso in Scauri, a picturesque seaside village in Minturno, Italy. Pia immigrated to America in 1958 on the ocean liner Cristoforo Colombo. She reunited with her family on Spruce Street on Stamford’s West Side.
John E. Grandbois died on June 12 in Lebanon, New Hampshire, following a valiant struggle with primary progressive aphasia. He was 81. He was born on July 11, 1941 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to parents Virginia and Morlan Grandbois. The family moved to New Canaan, where John attended St. Luke’s School and graduated in 1958.
Nora D. Ryan, beloved wife of Thomas J. Ryan, died on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after a long battle with interstitial lung disease. Nora was a long-time resident of Darien before retiring to Southport, North Carolina. She had a lengthy career as a corporate paralegal for various Fortune 50 corporations and law firms in Connecticut and New York City. In her leisure time, Nora was an avid reader, as well as a talented cook, baker and seamstress. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and her two dogs.
Marta Apy Elders of Rowayton passed away peacefully on May 7, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 78. Marta was born Oct. 3, 1943 in Stamford to the late Martin and Joan Apy of New Canaan. She graduated from New Canaan High School in 1961 and was the secretary of her class.
Geraldine “Gerry” Marshall, age 85, died peacefully on February 11, 2022, in her residence at Sunrise Senior Living in Fairfield, Connecticut. Her full and colorful life and legacies as a teacher, artist, and independent spirit will always be remembered by her family and close friends. The daughter of Louise and Sidney N. Zampiello, Gerry was born in New Haven on Aug. 6, 1936. Gerry and her older brother Richard were raised by their parents in nearby Hamden.
Souren Richard Nepola, 72, of New Britain, Connecticut, and formerly of Darien, Stamford and New Canaan, passed away on April 7, 2022, in New Haven. Born in Stamford on July 8, 1949, Rick was the devoted son of the late Salvatore Richard Nepola, DDS and late Dorothy E. Nepola née Terzian, formerly of Darien and New Canaan. Rick was a member of Darien High School class of 1967; then graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University in 1971, with a BSBA degree in Business and Finance. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1976. For over 40 years, Rick was a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and American Bar Association.
John M. Callagy died on April 28 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was 77. He had been a member of the Darien Board of Finance. John, the son of Judge Martin V. Callagy and Elizabeth Sherwood Callagy, was born May 22, 1944. Raised in New York City, John attended Saint Ignatius Loyola parochial school and Loyola School.
Jeffrey Steven Teare, 60, of Wesley Chapel, Florida and formerly of Darien, Trumbull and Newtown, passed away on May 2, 2022, surrounded by all who loved him. Jeff was born May 31, 1961 in Stamford and raised in Darien. He was the son of the late Connie Lee and Rollin Teare. After studying electromechanical technology at SUNY New Paltz, Jeff went on to own Travelin’ Tunes, a car audio business in Monroe. He later worked as a fabrication & technical specialist for Sony Mobile Electronics, designing and producing award-winning custom show vehicles, and was recently semi-retired from IT consulting.
Clifford W. DeForest, 91, of Darien passed away on May 2 at home surrounded by his loved ones. Clifford was born at Norwalk Hospital on Sept. 28, 1930. He was the son of John and Viola DeForest of New Canaan and graduated from New Canaan High School in 1948. He lived in New Canaan, and served as a special officer with the New Canaan Police Department before moving to Darien in 1951.
James R. Hock, 55, died Monday morning April 4, 2022 at his home in Hartland, Vermont. Jamie was born on May 9, 1966 in Greenwich, the son of Doris (Moore) and Nicholas G. Hock. He graduated from Darien High School in 1986 and worked at Palmer’s Market through a state program for disabled adults. He spent time living in Englewood, Colorado before moving to Woodstock, Vermont and then to Hartland. Jamie had a great attitude and zest for life.
Walter Otto Lindecke, 94, of Wilton died peacefully on March 8. Born in Cobbel, Germany in 1927 to Otto and Anna Lindecke, Walter moved with his family to Cobleskill, New York when he was eight years old. There, he met his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Dox, with whom he built his life in Warwick, New York, followed by Belleair, Florida and finally Wilton. He graduated from Adelphi University with a bachelor’s degree in business management and had a long and distinguished career in business, retiring from the Warwick Savings Bank. Upon moving to Wilton at the age of 90, Walter made many friends at the Wilton Senior Center, enjoying hours of games and friendship with so many of Wilton’s senior community.
Lois Boots Berry died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on April 21. She was 90. Lois was born on Sept. 4, 1931, in East Hampton, New York, the daughter of the late Lois Kingsley Boots and Dr. Ralph H. Boots. She was raised in New York City and East Hampton, and was a graduate of The Chapin School, Westover School, and Bennett College.
