Kind, hilarious, handsome, larger-than-life, flying Irishman. world traveler Stephen Francis Ryan is off to the pearly gates. Steve graduated from Iona College, received an MBA from UConn and served his country. He married the perfect woman, the lovely Marion Therese, with whom he enjoyed 61 years of marriage. They raised two daughters and endured the loss of their baby son, Stephen Douglas.

Nancy Jane Hecker Steinegger, 89 years old, a resident of Stamford and formerly both Darien and Greenwich, passed away on Friday, Sept 16, 2022, with her loving family and family of caregivers by her side. Nancy was born April 19, 1933, in Stamford to the late Mable and William Hecker. She graduated from Stamford High School in 1951, and immediately began her 67-year marriage with her high school sweetheart, John Steinegger. By the age of 22, Nancy quickly learned how to keep herself, her husband, and their three children happy and thriving. Volunteering as a Cub Scout den mother, PTA president, homeroom mother, and church lay teacher were critically important roles that made Nancy the best mother she could possibly be.

William (Bill) Earle Ruscoe passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2022 after a long illness, with his wife of 56 years, Rosemarie, by his side at Maplewood Senior Living. Born on July 6, 1934 in Norwalk, Bill was a life-long resident of Darien. At Darien High School, Bill lettered in football, ice hockey and track. Following graduation, Bill served four years in the U.S. Navy and attended Springfield College and LaGuardia School of Aeronautics.

Martin Joseph Flaherty, 87, son of Therese Leinert Flaherty and Joseph Martin Flaherty, passed away quietly in his sleep on Oct. 14. Marty loved growing up during Darien’s more rural past, and spent hours exploring the woods, streams, swamps, and shoreline of his hometown. Interest in the natural world around him led to a fascination for his parents’ Victory garden where he learned to cultivate and preserve fruits and vegetables. Though taken by the garden, working the family chicken business was more of a chore, as was mowing the lawn of his paternal grandparents, Catherine and Martin Joseph Flaherty.

Robert E. McGill III, 91, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sept. 22 at his home in Essex. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Known as Bob and also “Tiger” to his many friends and colleagues, he was a graduate of Williams College (1954) and the Harvard Business School (1956). Born in San Francisco in 1931, his family relocated to Cincinnati in 1941, where he graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1949.
