Donna has been our volunteer exhibit coordinator and curator at the Darien Nature Center for the past three years. She has gifted the Nature Center her time and talent to shape meaningful and thoughtful exhibits that reflect the values and mission of the Nature Center to celebrate and engage with the natural world. In addition to her curatorial skills, Donna has shared her own beautiful artwork with the Nature Center in exhibits that lift up the natural world to our visiting public.

‘Fireside,’ Darien Nature Center’s Annual Fundraiser, Takes Place Saturday, Oct 19

Things are heating up at the Darien Nature Center as volunteers and sponsors prepare for Fireside, the organization’s annual fundraising event. It will be held outside on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. and will feature farm-to-table food catered by The Schoolhouse at Cannondale, signature cocktails, music, and a silent auction full of exciting offerings for all ages. “Grab a sweater, come as you are, and enjoy the company of your friends and neighbors under the stars. Our goal is to treat everyone to excellent food and fun while celebrating all the Nature Center does for our community,” said event co-chair Meaghan Hetherington.

Lemonade Stand Contributions Lead to Ferret Time for Four Darien Kids

Two local families recently organized a lemonade stand and donated the proceeds to the Darien Nature Center. — an announcement from Darien Nature Center
Caroline and Catherine Gies, along with Claris and Vivian Flannery, set up their stand on Knollwood Lane for two hours on Labor Day. They charged a few quarters for lemonade and snow cones, and ended up raising a total of $162! When the girls stopped by to gift that money to the Nature Center, they shared some special playtime with the organization’s three resident ferrets, Winston, Frankie, and Biagio. Thank you to the Gies and Flannery families!

Volunteers Work to Create Native Plant Habitat in Part of Darien Nature Center

Out with the old, in with the new. A group of town residents rang in the month of August by clearing out an overgrown area behind the Darien Nature Center to make way for a native plant habitat. — an announcement from Darien Nature Center

Victoria Heyne, Deepika Saksena, Eve Mauger, Eliza Wetmore, Juliet Cain, Sig Buchmayer, Chris Filmer, Charlie Wetmore all volunteered hours of their time to make this possible. Saksena, co-chair of the Darien Pollinator Pathway group, said the plot had been overrun by phragmites, which are large perennial grasses normally found in tropical regions. Saksena said she and other volunteers plan to revegetate the spot with species that are native to Connecticut, in addition to existing milkweed plants.

The Darien Nature Center is selling raffle tickets in advance of its annual “Down on the Farm” celebration. Participants have the opportunity to choose which of the following four prizes they would like to win: a night out in Darien, a custom lemonade stand, a marble sculpture, and a Nature Center birthday party! — an announcement from Darien Nature Center

Night out in Darien is for eight people and begins with a private tasting at Sipstirs followed by a four-course dinner at The Charles, the Darien Butcher Shop’s pop-up restaurant. The Shop says it is “Darien’s most unique dining experience,” with a menu crafted by Chef Peter Crawford using the highest quality meat, poultry, fish and in-season vegetables. The evening is valued at $1,500.
