Two motor vehicles were entered sometime overnight in different parts of town, owners discovered Friday and Sunday — the first such reports in about two and a half months, Police Chief Raymond Osborne said. The vehicles, of course, were unlocked. Locked vehicles are hardly ever entered overnight in residential neighborhoods. “We went over two and a half months without a motor vehicle burglary,” Osborne told the Police Commission on Tuesday. “So, we had a good streak […] now we’ve only had a couple of them, and hopefully this is an anomaly.

A 40-year-old Bronx man accused of stealing an unlocked SUV from a driveway on Sedgwick Avenue and entering a home on Overbrook Lane the same night two months ago has been arrested, Darien police said. The initial report from a woman who saw the burglar dashing out of her house was that it was a female, but the man who was arrested on Tuesday and who was taken to court Wednesday morning told police he had committed the crimes alone. Police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

“Through investigative means,” police said in their announcement on Wednesday, they found evidence against Casey J. Gagnon of Bryant Avenue in the Bronx. Police were granted an arrest warrant by a judge, and New York City police took Gagnon into custody. On Tuesday, Darien police detectives took custody of Gagnon in New York County Court in Manhattan after he waived extradition.

Darien police are advising the public that it’s becoming more frequent for thieves who check to see if vehicles are unlocked to also check to see if a house is unlocked. It happened around Christmas on Fairfield Avenue, in a theft that led to the arrest of a 17-year-old Norwalk boy, and homes were entered twice overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, Jan. 9 to 10. Teenagers involved in these thefts and attempts at stealing can often be involved in more serious crimes elsewhere, the statement said. Here’s a statement from Darien police, including details on the recent overnight incidents:

A 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan, parked in the driveway at 47 Fitch Ave. was found stolen the morning after Christmas, one of four vehicles that Darien owners told police had been entered that night. Here’s how Darien police described the incidents:

The stolen SUV had been locked — but other vehicles parked outside the same home weren’t, and the owner said the SUV may have been taken using a spare key in one of the unlocked cars. The Tiguan had been seen in the driveway the night before, at about 11 p.m., when residents of the house arrived home and parked two other SUVs in the driveway, leaving them unlocked. Sometime before 9:18 a.m., when police were called, the door of one of the SUVs, a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, was found ajar.
