Darien police are investigating an incident in which they say a 15-year-old Darien boy punched a UPS driver who was making a delivery near Holmes School.

Police gave this account, none of which is proven in court, and no charges have been filed:

Police were called to the front of Holmes School at 2:59 p.m. on Thursday, March 10 on the report of breach of peace involving juveniles.

The delivery driver told police he first passed by two boys near the intersection of Hollow Tree Ridge Road and Hanson Road. He said the two yelled profanities at him and he heard what sounded like something hitting his truck.

Later, when he was making a delivery on Hoyt Street and had his car parked near Holmes School (at 18 Hoyt St.), he saw the same two boys on the sidewalk walking toward him. One of the boys approached him at the side of his truck and began arguing with the driver.

“So you think you’re a tough guy,” the boy said, according to the driver, a 38-year-old Norwalk man. The driver told the boy to walk away and not pick a fight with a grown man.

The juvenile swung his closed fist at the driver, hitting the right side of the driver’s face. Two adult witnesses who saw the punch then intervened, and the altercation ended with the boy backing away. Police saw that the right side of the driver’s head was red, consistent with being struck.

The 15-year-old said they had yelled “UPS sucks!” earlier but nobody threw anything. He said he and the other boy, a 14-year-old also from Darien, were walking when they saw the truck and driver in front of Holmes School and thought the UPS guy was there to confront them.

The boy said the UPS driver got out of the truck, pulled out a knife and threatened him before he punched the man.

Both adult witnesses said they saw the punch. One said he didn’t see anything before that. The other said he was close by and heard the boy speak to the driver but didn’t hear the driver make any threats to either juvenile. That witness said he didn’t see the driver pull out a knife.

The 15-year-old boy was held and later released to his parents. The boy who was with him was not charged.

The matter remains under investigation.
