More than 250 volunteers gathered in three shifts on Sunday, March 13 in Saint Luke’s Parish Hall to pack over 50,000 healthy meals.

The meals were formulated by Feeding Children Everywhere, the Orlando, FL-based nonprofit that empowers people to fight hunger. At a cost of 25 cents per serving, the Hunger Project meals represented $12,500 in donations by Saint Luke’s and participating volunteers.

To the beat of rock and roll, six assembly lines at Saint Luke’s competed for bragging rights for the most meals packed. Volunteers of all ages—from toddlers to ninety-year-olds—scooped lentils, rice, dried vegetables and sea salt into 6-serving plastic bags.

When the music died down, 175 cases holding over 50,000 meals were stacked and ready to deliver to Person-to-Person’s food pantries, to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County in Stamford and to The Connecticut Food Bank in Wallingford.

The Hunger Project was organized by Saint Luke’s to benefit hungry families in Darien’s own back yard. Despite the Gold Coast image, hunger is rampant but often hidden in Fairfield County where earnings from low-wage jobs or fixed incomes of the elderly fail to cover basic living costs.

Thursday Community Suppers

Sharing food is not a one-shot event at Saint Luke’s, where Person-to-Person was founded in 1968. Every week the Parish hosts a Community Supper, where guests enjoy a hot meal and great company for one dollar.

Community Suppers take place Thursdays, 5-7pm, in the Parish Hall. The public is invited to attend, and local organization participate as sponsors.
