Thefts from home mailboxes and from the mailboxes inside the Darien Post Office have continued, with two victims reporting incidents to police, one on Thursday; the other, Friday. According to Darien police, these new cases are still under investigation:

A woman told police on Thursday that she had mailed two checks at the drop box inside the Darien Post Office lobby on Corbin Drive. Her bank contacted her to say one of her checks had been altered and cashed for a much larger amount than it was originally made out for. The victim also discovered that a second check had also been altered for a much larger amount, but the bank prevented payment for that check. In a separate case, a Hollow Tree Ridge Road resident told police on Friday that two checks he had put in his mailbox between Nov.

Parents, where were your kids last Friday night? Vandalism in the form of spray-painted insults was found at Tilley Pond Park on Saturday morning. Police went to the park at 7:30 a.m., Saturday after receiving a report about it. There they saw a cement structure in the park spray-painted with graffiti regarding police, including “ACAB” (which stands for “All Cops Are B____s”). A construction vehicle sitting in the park had “SAVE GAS” spray-painted on the front blade.

A custom mountain bike was reported stolen on Thursday, Nov. 11, from the driveway of a home Tokeneke Road. Police said officers went to the home after the victim called at 5:32 p.m. that day. The victim said the bicycle had been in the driveway earlier in the day. The Evil Brand Offering bicycle is described as all black, with a gold fork and silver shocks.

Mailboxes new anti-theft Darien Post Office

Seven victims reported the theft of checks mailed from mailboxes in Darien, including mailboxes outside the Post Office — and in one case, a paycheck that was mailed to a town resident — the victims told police on Nov. 2, 3, 6, 9, 10 and 11. The checks had been mailed as early as Oct. 6 (the paycheck) and as late as Nov. 3.

Recent reports around town of stolen mail involving checks being cashed has caused the Darien Police Department to recommend avoiding use of home mailboxes for outgoing bills. Although mail theft has even occurred when checks were mailed from the mailboxes outside the Darien Post Office, police are still recommending that outdoor, blue U.S. Postal Service mailboxes can be used. Envelopes containing checks should be mailed from inside the Darien Post Office or paid online, if possible, police say. For those who have mailed checks, regularly review bank or credit card statements to confirm that the amount and payee are correct. Blue U.S. Postal Service mailboxes are also recommended (although thefts occurred from the ones outside the town Post Office), as is stopping mail service when out of town.

A 72-year-old Darien man was arrested after he swung at someone else in a domestic incident, police said, adding that the victim was able to block the blow. The man also tried to stop the victim from calling police, the police announcement said. Darien police gave this further account of the matter, including accusations not proven in court:

Police were called to a home in town at 5:02 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7. They were told the man tried to get into the victim’s room to hurt the victim.

A Joseph Street man told police that on Veterans Day, after he left his home by someone claiming to want to buy sneakers, then someone broke in and stole his entire sneaker collection, valued at $3,800. Darien police gave this account of what happened:

At 6:45 p.m., the man was contacted through a Facebook messenger account by a person offering to buy some sneakers. The two agreed to meet at Stamford Railroad Station. The victim said that while driving to the station, he lost contact with the buyer, so he went back home at 7:38 p.m.

There, he found his locked bedroom door was open, and both the lock and door were broken. Along with the $3,800 sneaker collection, another $1,400 had been taken.

Three thieves entered Stop and Shop supermarket in Goodwives Shopping Center early Saturday morning wearing hoods and facemasks, then loaded up shopping carts with large containers of laundry detergent and left without paying, police were told. The incident was reported to police at 7:33 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 6. The shopping carts were loaded with containers of Tide and Tide Pods, and the estimated total value of them was somewhere between $200 and $350. The thieves left the shopping center at 25 Old Kings Hwy.

It took about a minute for a thief to steal leaf blower in a trailer parked on Deerfield Road on Saturday, Nov. 6, according to police. The victim noticed that the Redmax leaf blower was missing, and a resident having leaves picked up took a look at surveillance video, which showed the theft, police said. The incident was reported in a call to police at 12:11 p.m.

At 11:20 a.m., a dark car pulled up to the trailer, a person wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans got out and could be seen taking the leaf blower and putting it in the vehicle’s trunk, then driving off at 11:21 a.m.

A 33-year-old man, stopped by a police officer on the Post Road sometime past midnight on Sunday, Nov. 7, had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol content in him for driving, Darien police said. Police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Edgar Lima-Barrera was driving west on the Post Road (police didn’t say where on the road) when a police officer saw his car cross the double yellow line into the eastbound traffic lane. The officer had the driver stop. When talking with Lima-Barrera, the officer smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic drink and saw that the driver’s eyes were red and glassy.

A 34-year-old man was found by an officer in the man’s car on the side of the Post Road near Dubois Street after police had been told a car was swerving and without headlights, police said. Darien police gave this additional information about the matter, including accusations not proven in court:

The report to police (which came on Wednesday, Oct. 13) mentioned a white Acura, and the driver’s car fit the description. It was off the roadway, on sidewalk and grass. The driver seemed to be confused and had glassy red eyes, and the smell of an alcoholic drink came from inside the car.

A 22-year-old Port Chester, New York man was charged by police on accusations he repeatedly showed up at the victim’s Darien home after he was told not to do so, police said. Darien police also said the man created 10 “fake” social media accounts in an effort to communicate with the victim over the past several months. The police account of the matter, which includes accusations not proven in court, also says:

On Monday, Oct. 11, the victim told police that the man had recently been at the victim’s home after being told not to visit again. When police arrived at the home, the man had already left, but he was soon found in the area.

A 31-year-old man was driving early one recent morning on the Post Road with a child in a child seat which was unsecured to the car, police said. When an officer stopped the car, police added, the child and child seat were wedged in between the front and back seats, and the man’s blood-alcohol content was well over the legal limit. The police announcement gave no indication that the child was injured or harmed. Police gave this additional information in their account, which included accusations not proven in court:

At 1:31 a.m., Saturday, an officer reported that a vehicle went over the double yellow line on the Post Road (the announcement didn’t say where on that street, but the vehicle was stopped on Brookside Road). After the officer approached the driver, Ozni Cucpacay of Davenport Street in Norwalk, and smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.

A 26-year-old man was driving over the traffic lines and without lights on the Post Road at 3:41 a.m. recently, and according to a breath test, he had double the legal amount of blood-alcohol content in him, Darien police said. Police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

On Monday, Oct. 11, an officer saw a vehicle on the Post Road (the police announcement didn’t say where) and saw the passenger-side tires swerve over dotted white lines. The officer also saw that the rear lights weren’t on. After stopping the car and approaching the driver, a Stamford man, the officer smelled alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.

Parts of Christie Hill Road will be closed at times for the 11 days from Monday, Oct. 18 to Friday, Oct. 29 (excluding weekends), during an ongoing gas main construction project, Darien police announced. “Police, traffic agents and flaggers will be on scene to assist with traffic” and “school buses will be accommodated,” according to the announcement on Friday. “Traffic will be diverted onto Middlesex Road as needed,” the announcement said.
