Twice overnight from Saturday to Sunday handbags were stolen from vehicles parked in driveways off of Goodwives River Road, and in both cases the handbags were later found, but without the money that was in them, police say.
Darien police also stopped a “suspicious person” who is not a Darien resident, riding a bicycle at about 12:14 a.m. Sunday on the Post Road. Police are very actively looking into whether that person, a male, had anything to do with the thefts, or with a similar theft discovered on Seagate Road on Monday, Sept. 28.
Police gave these accounts of the thefts:
Sometime between midnight, Oct. 10 to 11 and 7 a.m., the front passenger window of a black 2013 Nissan Sentra was smashed and a handbag was taken from inside the car. The purse was valued at $500, and there were credit cards inside, but when the handbag was found about a tenth of a mile from the scene, the only thing missing from it was $10 in cash.
Cash — and cash alone — appears to have been the object in another theft that night. Someone entered an unlocked 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and took a handbag from it. The handbag was discovered at about 2:30 a.m. when police were scouring the area, looking for clues or a suspect in the other burglary.
A police officer saw the purse on the other side of a fence, but not far from the roadway. Police later spoke with the owner of the handbag, who confirmed it was missing. Again, the handbag was valued at $500.
Police are continuing to investigate the thefts and the suspicious bicycle rider.
