A street sign was taken out of the ground and large rocks were put on the road on Raymond Street, mostly near Tulip Tree Lane in vandalism overnight from Thursday, Dec. 17 to Friday, Dec. 18. Darien police said they found some adult teenagers in the area who might have committed the vandalism, but they didn’t have enough evidence to make an arrest, so the men were released after questioning that night. The vandals, whoever they were, had put at least one street sign and various large rocks on the roadway.

The least interesting report out of Monday’s Darien police news briefing on Monday was that someone had vandalized a few trees (probably with spray paint), by adorning them with red images of swastikas and the phallic part of the male anatomy. The event happened sometime between noon on Saturday, July 18, and noon the next day at the Olsen Wood Bird Sanctuary, a tract owned by the Darien Land Trust consisting of a trail between Echo Drive and Heather Lane, parallel to Hoyt Street. A 16-year-old girl did the right thing and reported the matter to police. The land trust was informed. For some reason, other news publications covering Darien thought that this was the first report from the briefing that they should publish.

Damage to Pool Turns Merely Stupid Vandalism to Costly Mischief

Stupid vandalism worth eye-rolling, but not a lot of money: Stealing a stop sign and throwing it into a swimming pool. Harmful vandalism worth $15,000: the damage done to a pool when the stop sign tears the pool liner, allowing water to leak out. Darien police say the incident happened sometime early in the morning of June 30 or in the night before at a residence on Pear Tree Point Road. A resident of the home saw a dark object under water in the pool early in the morning and found it was a stop sign. Police say the sign appears to have been originally located at the intersection of Pear Tree Point Road and Long Neck Point Road, which was missing a stop sign.
