The least interesting report out of Monday’s Darien police news briefing on Monday was that someone had vandalized a few trees (probably with spray paint), by adorning them with red images of swastikas and the phallic part of the male anatomy.

In other news, the sun rose this morning.

The event happened sometime between noon on Saturday, July 18, and noon the next day at the Olsen Wood Bird Sanctuary, a tract owned by the Darien Land Trust consisting of a trail between Echo Drive and Heather Lane, parallel to Hoyt Street. A 16-year-old girl did the right thing and reported the matter to police. The land trust was informed.

For some reason, other news publications covering Darien thought that this was the first report from the briefing that they should publish. We thought their decisions were odd enough that we’re making it our first report, too.

In the event that the incident was an act by a dangerous group of Nazis with an interest in male anatomy (or a dangerous sex cult with an interest in Nazi symbols), Darienite.com will get you the latest update, however unlikely, for the safety of you and your family.

In similar “news,” the sun rose this morning, a child cried loudly in the library and, very probably, some child acted naughty in the woods the other day in just the way that children have acted naughty for many decades. That’s what they do. That last one was done for shock value. Is anyone really shocked? Really?

We have other, more important news for you elsewhere in this publication. In fact all of our other news is more important.

  1. I am shocked! No, just kidding. That said. Back in the 60s when my Jewish dad moved my family to Darien from Manhattan, and we would see swastikas spray painted here and there, it was chilling.
With Darien’s history of restricted real estate and country clubs, it should always give people pause that any teen thinks it’s funny to make swastika graffiti.
