Stupid vandalism worth eye-rolling, but not a lot of money: Stealing a stop sign and throwing it into a swimming pool.

Harmful vandalism worth $15,000: the damage done to a pool when the stop sign tears the pool liner, allowing water to leak out.

Darien police say the incident happened sometime early in the morning of June 30 or in the night before at a residence on Pear Tree Point Road. A resident of the home saw a dark object under water in the pool early in the morning and found it was a stop sign.

Police say the sign appears to have been originally located at the intersection of Pear Tree Point Road and Long Neck Point Road, which was missing a stop sign.

Street signs generally cost the town about $50, police have said.
