The easiest time to get rid of your hazardous household waste in Darien is coming this Saturday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Noroton Railroad Station parking lot, so

You can also drop it off at nearby towns later (see the list below), but it won’t get any easier this year than when you can do it right here in town. If you’ve already got some household hazardous waste you’re itching to get rid of, put it aside this week and look for more. Household hazardous waste can be dangerous if some of the chemicals mix for whatever reason (for instance, if you misread a marred label or if something leaks). If you pour them down the drain or throw them out with regular garbage, they can be a hazard to the environment or to other people (or both). If a young child ingests them, the danger is obvious.

Darien residents can go to any of these Household Hazardous Waste Day dropoff programs to get rid of stuff if you don’t want to wait for (or miss) Darien’s June 3 drop-off day. If you’ve already got some household hazardous waste you’re itching to get rid of, start putting it aside. The first of the drop-off programs takes place April 29 in Weston, the next is on May 6 in Greenwich. The last one is Oct. 28 in Wilton.

Darienites Can Go: New Canaan Household Hazardous Waste Pick-up Day

There are three more Household Hazardous Waste Days in nearby towns where Darien residents can go to drop off the stuff, and New Canaan’s pickup day is this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What is household hazardous waste? Household hazardous waste can be any improperly discarded product that can be classified as toxic (poisonous), corrosive, flammable or reactive (explosive). Such products can be found in most homes, garages or workshops and when improperly disposed of can poison people and animals and pollute the home and natural environments.

On a day (June 6) when household hazardous waste was being collected across the tracks in a Noroton Heights train station parking lot, some people left their waste on a picnic table at the nearby Darien Depot youth center. Paint cans, fertilizer and turpentine were left on a picnic table, Darien police said.  The town Department of Public Works has now released more information about the incident. Here’s the passage in the latest quarterly report (April to June) of the Darien Department of Public Works:
