Police: DUI Charge After Darien Man, 18, Looks at Phone, Drives Into Marsh at Gorham’s Pond

An 18-year-old Darien man who had been drinking alcohol and taking pot before driving on Sunswyck Road was looking down at his phone when his vehicle went across Goodwives River Road into a marsh, police said. He wound up at the edge of Gorham’s Pond, police said. In their announcement police didn’t say he was injured in any way. Police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

The teenager, a Revere Road resident, was found standing with the vehicle (police didn’t say what kind of vehicle) when police arrived, after an 11:23 p.m. call on Wednesday, June 23. The man said he looked down while using his cell phone (police didn’t say exactly what he was doing on the phone).

It gets even worse when the officer sees your vehicle hit a parked car. And you’re truly in a difficult spot when the officer smells alcohol on your breath. People who use alcohol and marijuana — not necessarily while on the road — are significantly more likely to speed, text, and adopt other reckless behaviors when they do drive, says a AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study. — an announcement from AAA Northeast
These same drivers are far more likely to drive under the influence of alcohol and to ride with an intoxicated driver compared to those who only drink, but don’t puff, the AAA study also reports. Compared to alcohol-only users, the research also found people who admitted to using both drugs were more likely to self-report such behaviors as:

Speeding in residential neighborhood (55% vs 35% for alcohol-only)
Aggressive driving (52% for both vs. 28% for alcohol only)
Running red lights (48% for both vs. 32% for alcohol only) and
Texting while driving (40% for both vs.

Police: Woman in Car Crash Had Four Times the Legal Alcohol Limit in Her Blood

After a 56-year-old woman crashed into a tree on Sunday, Jan. 10, she was taken to a hospital, where tests showed she had a blood-alcohol level of 0.33, police said. That amount is more than four times the legal limit for a driver. Darien police gave these additional details about the case:

Nicole Bernardo of Richmond Hill Road in New Canaan was driving when she lost control of her Subaru and hit a tree near the intersection of Ox Ridge Lane and Middlesex Road. The car’s front end was heavily damaged, and the airbag deployed.
