Nighttime highway work is already closing lanes on Interstate 95 at various spots between Greenwich and Westport, and for the week starting Monday, Dec. 5 more is on the way for daytime hours, both on I-95 and the Merritt Parkway, state officials have announced. Bottom line: In the area surrounding Darien and well beyond it, if you’re driving after 9 p.m. or before 5 p.m., plan for delays on Interstate 95 through Dec. 16. Darien Officials: Hoyt Street Sidewalk Work Held Up by State Transportation Dept

The project to build new sidewalks along the southern end of Hoyt Street was supposed to be complete before school started and kids were headed into and out of Holmes School, but crews were working on the sidewalk actually in front of Holmes on the first day of school. Students living north of the elementary school had to walk around open pits, orange cones or cross to the other side of the busy street (where there are no sidewalks). Darien Public Works Director Ed Gentile recently said he hoped to get the project completed by early November, possibly this week. The reason: Hoyt Street is state Route 106 which is controlled by the state Department of Transportation, and the project needed to have a “state encroachment permit” approved by that department’s officials, Gentile said. They took months longer to approve the project than Gentile or other Darien officials thought it would take.

Here’s the prepared statement from Darien resident Jim Cameron, head of the Commuter Action Group, gave to state officials at Wednesday night’s public hearing in Stamford on proposed fare increases for Connecticut train riders:

My name is Jim Cameron and I am a resident of Darien and have ridden Metro-North for 25 years. I served 19 years on the CT MN Rail Commuter Council, 4 as its Chairman. I am also the founder of The Commuter Action Group, a rail advocacy organization. First, I would like to commend Gov Malloy and CDOT for yesterday’s announcement of the purchase of 60 additional M8 rail cars to handle our rapidly expanding ridership. This is very good news, if long overdue.

ConnDOT Official: Talmadge Hill Station on ‘Top of List’ for Getting Canopies

Talmadge Hill Railroad Station, the only station on the New Haven Line without canopies overhead to protect waiting passengers from rain, snow and sleet, is on the “top of my list” for a canopy, said a top official with the state Department of Transportation. John Bernick, assistant rail administrator for the department, said at the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council meeting held at Darien Town Hall on March 18 that he’s got to worry about keeping the line going safely, which includes replacing rails, ties and major bridge repair or even replacement projects. But Bernick sounded hopeful that money might be found for a canopy at the station, which he called “a basic need.” “I’ve got to keep my mind on what’s the state of good repair on the line in general,” he said, but he added, “Certainly Talmadge Hill, you’re top of my list for canopies, so we’ll look into that.” He continued: “We do have some Go CT money [a state transportation financing program] for the New Canaan Line.

ConnDOT Official: Noroton Heights Station Project Will Replace Platforms, Not Expand Them

When all the Noroton Heights Railroad Station concrete platforms are replaced starting next spring, the state Department of Transportation won’t be expanding the platform, a department official said Wednesday at a meeting in Town Hall. A project to replace the concrete “Double T” platforms that are crumbling at the station will be undertaken in segments until all of them are replaced, the department has already announced. At a meeting of the Connecticut Commuter Rail Council held in Darien Town Hall on Wednesday, council members asked John Bernick, assistant rail administrator for the department, whether or not the station could get the platform lengthened, since future trains may have as many as 12 cars. Right now, the north platform has 10 segments and the south platform has nine, Bernick said. Council members asked First Selectman Jayme Stevenson whether or not she’d prefer a longer platform, and Stevenson said that in talks with ConnDOT, she’d told the state she would want to maximize the number of platforms, ideally to 12 on each side.
