For the third year in a row, the Chelsea Piers Aquatics Club has been awarded the honor of a Silver Medal ranking in the 2019 USA Swimming Club Excellence program.

Chelsea Piers Starts Field Hockey Program with 18-Year DHS Coach Mo Minicus

Mo Minicus, head field hockey coach at Darien High School for 18 years, has been named one of two coaches of a field hockey program starting up this September at Chelsea Piers, the Stamford sports complex a mile from Darien. The new program will include field hockey training “from learn-to-play youth programs to indoor leagues and competitive club teams,” Chelsea Piers said in an announcement Friday. The announcement described the program this way:

“The 2018-19 season will launch in September with weekly skill development clinics for girls ages 9-14.  Chelsea Piers expects to field clubs for girls age 9-18, with team tryouts scheduled for late November. “The competitive club will play an indoor winter season, as well as turf and outdoor play in spring and summer.  Skill development clinics and camps will be held throughout the year. “The Chelsea Piers Field Hockey Club also expects to host the first-ever Fairfield County indoor play college showcase event in early 2019.”

Chelsea Piers Connecticut has appointed longtime Darien High School lacrosse Coach Jeff Brameier as the Stamford sports complex’s new field house director. Brameier has been a stand out coach on the high school sports scene in Fairfield County for decades and is a nationally recognized lacrosse coach. He will continue as head lacrosse coach at Darien High School, he said Monday evening. ________

He will oversee all field house business and operations including coaching and overseeing the lacrosse program.  Brameier will design and run lacrosse programs for preschoolers through high school. “We are excited to have Jeff join our leadership team of talented coaches,” commented Greta Wagner, executive director of Chelsea Piers Connecticut.

The fifth annual The Winter Challenge gymnastics meet is coming to Chelsea Piers Connecticut, featuring events for about 900 male and female athletes, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 to 18 at Chelsea Piers Connecticut in Stamford. Competing athletes, ranging from beginner to advanced level gymnasts, will include  54 teams from six states — Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The event is sanctioned by USA Gymnastics and utilizes all certified USAG equipment. __________

U.S. Squash Head National Coach Visits Chelsea Piers CT, Which Just Hired a New Squash Director

Legendary squash coach Paul Assaiante spoke to fellow enthusiasts for the sport Monday at Chelsea Piers athletic complex in Stamford, which just announced the appointment of its new squash director, John Musto. On Monday night, about 50 squash players and their parents gathered in The Loft where the Trinity College coach and U.S. Squash head national coach — who is also a U.S. Squash Hall of Famer — enumerated the pluses of college squash and how to prepare. “Junior squash in the U.S. is up 700 percent in the last ten years,” Assaiante said, adding that there is greater access to facilities, including those at Chelsea Piers, and more programming in junior high, high school and college. ____________
