Selectman Candidate Christa McNamara Has Worked Hard for the Community

To the editor:

I am writing in support of Christa McNamara who is a Republican running for a spot on the Board of Selectmen. I met Christa when our daughters became best friends in nursery school. I have been in and out of the McNamara home for 14 years. Christa and I both grew up in Rye, New York and our families have known each other for over 40 years. I watched this dynamic woman raise three children at the same time that she rolled up her sleeves and worked hard to improve our community.

Some Tighter Parking Regulations and Higher Merchant Fees for Parking Permits Proposed

At this coming Monday’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen, the board will consider a proposal to raise the small annual fee for employee parking on town lots for merchants with stores near the lots. The board will also consider a proposal to limit the amount of time vehicles can be parked at certain spots. Both proposals came from Town Administrator Kathleen Buch in memos dated Sept. 5 and addressed to the town parking authority, which is the Board of Selectmen in Darien. In the memo about merchant fees, Buch wrote:

The merchant parking permit fee has not been raised in over a decade, while we have increased commuter permit fees more than once over that time.

Board of Selectmen Choose Kevin Cunningham for Police Commission to Succeed Paul Johnson

With Police Commission Chairman Paul Johnson deciding to retire from his seat on that board, probably in September, the Board of Selectmen voted 3-2 on Thursday night to name Kevin Cunningham, a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, as his replacement. Sharad Samy had been recommended by the Democratic Town Committee this spring, after both Samy and Cunningham were interviewed by the committee, Chairman David Bayne said. At the selectmen’s meeting, Cunningham, also a Democrat, was supported by the three Republicans and Samy by the two Democrats. Selectmen met in executive session for about 50 minutes before going into open session, where First Selectman Jayme Stevenson explained the circumstances of the replacement and the board voted, all in about minutes. Stevenson said the board wrestled with the decision with perhaps more deliberation than on any appointment the selectmen have endorsed since she’s been a member.
