The garbage in a trash container at Cherry Lawn Park was found on fire just after midnight last Monday, police said.
A police officer was flagged down by someone near the park at about 12:15 a.m., police said. Officers put out the fire with extinguishers, and firefighters from Darien Fire Department flooded the container with water to prevent the fire from starting again.
The only damage was to the plastic lid. The Darien Park & Recreation Department was notified about the damage.
Firefighters told police that it didn’t appear that an accelerant was used to set the fire on purpose, and there were no signs of vandalism. Police said they don’t know if the fire was accidental or an act of arson.
Other trash containers in the park were checked, and none had any signs of fire.
