In a series of actions as convoluted as spaghetti, the last time Stop & Shop employees saw the woman dressed all in black was when she walked off with seven containers of Enfamil baby formula that she didn’t pay for, and right into a black taxi.

The unusual series of events was described this way by Darien police:

The woman called Stop & Shop at Goodwives Shopping Center, 25 Old Kings Hwy. S. early in the afternoon of Monday, May 16. She inquired about whether or not the supermarket had Enfimil baby formula in stock. The employee confirmed that the store did, in fact, have it, and seven containers were put aside for the woman.

The woman, described as being in her 30s or 40s, arrived at the store a short time afterward, at about 2:30 p.m. She was described as having black hair and wearing black pants, a black jacket and black shoes. She was carrying a black and white striped handbag.

An employee at the customer service desk rang up the $129.43 transaction, but there was only $6.94 approved on the woman’s credit card (or debit card). Nevertheless, the woman took the baby formula and put it in her black and white striped handbag. She said she would call her bank, then made a phone call from her cell phone, or at leasat appeared to be doing that.

At that point, a different employee took over for the first employee. As that took place, the suspect left without paying and got into a black taxi. Police spoke to a driver with Darien Taxi who said he had made a couple of dropoffs at the supermarket, but didn’t recall the black-clad woman.
