Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Back on Nov. 30, 2017, at 5:17 p.m., police received a call from Gofer Ice Cream, at 1020 Post Road, about the counterfeit $50 bills.

Someone at the store realized they were phony after the three men had left. The employee found that two of the bills had the same serial number. (They’re supposed to be unique for each bill of the same denomination). A bartender at Ten Twenty also noticed that the bills passed there seemed phony, and two of them also had the same number.

Police looked at video surveillance records from both businesses and were able to recognize Amenaghaw Simms, 24, as one of the three men (police didn’t say how they identified him).

An arrest warrant was applied for and approved by a prosecutor and a judge, and on May 23, New York state police notified Darien police that Simms was in their custody. Simms’ address is listed as 507 Hegeman Ave., Brooklyn, in New York City.

Simms is charged with six counts each of second-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny and first-degree forgery.

Darien police detectives took custody of Simms on June 4 in Kings County criminal court in the Bronx. He was held on a $50,000 bond and was taken to state Superior Court in Stamford the next day. He remains in jail, and his next court date is July 15.
