Mary O’Brien, 97, passed away on Sept. 12. Her funeral will be on Sept. 14.

She was born on July 3, 1921, in Moberly, MO, the daughter of John and Margaret Tyrrell. Mary was raised in St. Louis, MO and graduated from Webster College in her home town.

In 1947 Mary married Navy Lt. William O’Brien in St. Louis and began an adventure that took them from St. Louis to Louisville, KY, to Atlanta, GA, to Portland, OR and finally to Greenwich in 1966, where they resided for over 40 years. After her husband’s passing in 2008, Mary moved to Darien to be closer to her children.

Mary and Bill were active members of St. Michael’s Parish and founding members of the Burning Tree Country Club.

After raising their five children, Mary began a career as a residential real estate agent in Greenwich with Cleveland, Duble & Arnold where she worked for 18 years.

Mary is survived by her children: Bill of Seattle, John of Rowayton, Molly O’Brien Spinney of New York City, Tim O’Brien of Atlanta, and Margaret Brindley of Denver; and the children’s loving spouses, nine grandchildren who adored her, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews from her brother John’s family from St. Louis.

There will be a mass to celebrate Mary’s life at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 at St. Michael Church, 469 North St., Greenwich, followed by a private service for immediate family members at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 399 North St.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in Mary’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
