Mrs. Jean Heckadon McCormick, 68, passed away Monday, May 9 at her residence after a two-year long courageous battle with melanoma.

Jean McCormick\’s funeral will be held June 4 in Aiken, S.C.

Mrs. McCormick was born Jan. 1, 1948 in Almirante, Panama. She is the daughter of the late Philip and Catherine Simpson Heckadon of Evans, Ga. Jean spent most of her formative years in Bakersfield, Calif.

She graduated from the University of the Pacific with a degree in education. Jean then earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Cornell University, followed by a masters in nursing from Yale University.

She began her nursing career in the Cardio-Thoracic ICU at New York Hospital and soon after moved to Connecticut, where she worked for many years in the Primary Care unit at Norwalk Hospital as a nurse practitioner.

As one of the first nurses at Brunswick School in Greenwich, Jean established and implemented medical policies to ensure student safety and compliance with state law.

During more than 10 years as a nurse practitioner at Westhill High School in Stamford, she lead a student nutrition club, which was highlighted on the CBS morning news toward the end of her tenure.

Jean believed in every student’s potential and encouraged underprivileged youth to work hard and dream big. She continued to use her gift as an educator while on faculty at Yale.

Jean resided in Darien for over 25 years. During that time, she was an active member of Noroton Presbyterian Church. Most recently, she retired and settled in Aiken, S.C.

Beyond her professional life and accomplishments, Jean was a loving mother, devoted wife, and a beloved daughter. Her commitment to helping others, educating children and caring for the sick speak to her selfless nature and embody her overall passion to making the world a better place. Jean will be greatly missed!

Jean is survived by her husband, Peter Carroll McCormick; a daughter Ellen Catherine McCormick of Arlington, Va.; a son, Peter Carroll McCormick, Jr. and daughter-in-law Mary of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Mallory and Finn McCormick of Charlotte, N.C.; and her mother, Catherine Heckadon of Evans, Ga.

A memorial service will be held at Jean’s residence in Aiken, S.C. on June 4, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Brian Coulter officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
