He grew up in Andover, Massachusetts and was the son of the late Harry and Grace Emmons. Harry graduated from Holderness School, Plymouth, New Hampshire and attended Bowdoin College before serving at the Merchant Marine Academy in Castine, Maine and in the U.S. Army.

In 1943, Harry won Maine’s men’s doubles tennis state championship. While at Holderness he played football, hockey and was captain of the tennis team. He was a graceful athlete on the tennis and paddle courts and was a lifelong member of the Tokeneke Club.

Harry was an accomplished figure skater and skier, and loved traveling to Europe to ski the Alps with his wife and friends. He was devoted to his beloved wife Rosamond, of nearly 60 years, who survives him.

As newlyweds, Harry gave Roz a gift of a garden that flourished for 52 years on Sunset Road. Harry had a green thumb, which he shared volunteering with Darien’s Beautification Committee.

Harry’s career for over 50 years was in the paper industry. As a distinguished executive, he ultimately became vice president of New York City’s Arthur Schroeder Paper Company.

Harry was also a realtor with William Pitt for over a decade. He had an ageless charisma and every generation appreciated his savvy wit and wonderful sense of humor.

Harry was deeply loved by his family: Lisa and son-in-law Peter Thoren of Darien. Polly and son-in-law Stuart Tilghman of Fairfield, Didi and son-in-law Henry MacLean of Milton, MA and his five grandchildren; Alexa and Lee Lee Tilghman and Laura, Lindsay and Tally Thoren. His brother Robert M. Emmons predeceased Harry.
