A woman walking her own dog with a friend was passing a neighbor’s house on Homestead Road on June 12 when the neighbor’s dog ran out of the house and attacked her dog, she told police.

While trying to defend her dog, the woman waIMG_3546s bitten several times herself — including a bite on her cheek that police called “significant” — although she didn’t notice that during the confrontation, police said.

Darien police gave the following account of the incident, which resulted in police orders for both dogs to be quarantined at home for two weeks:

The victim, 50, was walking in front of her neighbor’s house at about 9 a.m. when the other dog, a black Labrador Retriever, ran out. That dog’s owner later said a door was left open in the garage by a man doing construction work at the house.

The Labrador attacked her dog, whch was bitten on the neck and rear legs, and when the woman tried to intervene, she was also bitten — on her left upper leg, her left shin, on two spots on her right calf and on her left cheek.

The woman met with the dog’s owner, who told her that the Lab had all its shots up to date. Later, when she noticed the wound to her face, she received medical treatment, and her dog was treated for its puncture wounds at Norwalk Veterinary Hospital.

She told police about the incident on Thursday, June 18 (a police report didn’t mention the reason for the delay).

Police confirmed that the attacking dog’s shots were up to date. No tickets had been issued at the time of the police report, but the town animal control officer was looking into the incident.
