A thief somehow got ahold of a check from an envelope put in a mailbox at Darien Post Office, then cashed it with a name the victim isn’t familiar with, Darien police said.

The check was mailed on Jan. 20, but on April 2, the business where the check was directed contacted the victim to say that no payment had been received.

The victim checked the bank account, which showed the check had been cashed on Jan. 26 — but after it was endorsed by a stranger. The incident was reported to police on May 4.

In recent years, the Post Office on Corbin Drive has installed drive-up/drop-off mailboxes designed with more security features, including thin slots for envelopes, making it more difficult to steal mail.
